: Latest mods for my 258 amc
pityocamptes 07-28-2006, 03:22 PM Thought I'd post these for those interested. Recently I bought the aluminum plenium for my Weber 32/36 progressive through redline. Installed that and picked up some tubing, firewall mount, and offroad air filter in the ricer isle of Autozone. Cut a ~3" hole in the firewall, under the highpressure zone beneath the windshield and mounted the hose mount over this. Ran the air tubing from the plenium to the inline offroad filter and then ran the other side to the mount on the firewall. Now I have a fresh air intake. Power has been increased as well as performance.
I also installed an oil cooler from summit (~$120). Best mod yet. Engine temp will not go over 180-185 even during the hottest part of the day (110 F). Using sythentic oil also. Had to add about 1.5 quarts more with cooler. Pressure stays up around 55-65 psi at cruising and ~30-35 idle.

Flingarrows 07-29-2006, 02:49 PM did that come w the aluminum hat on the carb?

No, I bought it seperate from the redline distributer (weber web site).
LilRocky 07-30-2006, 07:04 AM OK, I"m a little puzzled by this setup. It appears that the filter element is open to engine compartment air. Also, how does air from the intake duct you fabricated enter the filter? Is the narrow end of the filter open?

The air filter also has an intake at the end. After installing it, I had similiar concerns and thought about completely enclosing it with a box. However, I have noticed a huge increase in performance so for now I'll just leave it. I believe most of the air is coming from the high pressure zone under the windshield as you can clearly hear the air being sucked in from this area.
canaminal 07-31-2006, 01:19 PM Ya but unless Im mistaken theres unfiltered air going through the air filter (center) to the motor.
Are my eyes decieved?

No, there are inner filter pleats as well. The outer filter pleats you see in the pics and at the end of the filter for the fresh air intake tube there are pleats also.

yes, the way that is set up is useless. the air going from the windshield area through the filter is not being filtered at all.

Actually your wrong. The other side of the filter (from filter to windshield) is an inverted filter cone (took another look at it). Basically it is a filter within a filter (double walled). So the air from the windshield (fire wall) to the filter is being filtered before entering the carb.
LilRocky 07-31-2006, 04:32 PM It's silly not to enclose it. Why the heck go to all the trouble to fab a fresh air duct, but leave the intake open to underhood (hot) air?!

Yea, I probably will when I get some more time. I'll have to throw that on the odd's and end's list... :shaking: :shaking:
But it still beats the shitty set up I had before.
reuben 07-31-2006, 11:32 PM could you please post up some picks of the air filter without the hoses attached.
MochaMike 07-31-2006, 11:50 PM Where is the cold air coming from?
Inside the cab/through the firewall, or through the vents on the hood below the windshield?
If it's the vents on the hood, what happens when it rains & the water flows through there?
