I know that the Ford 9" is a plenty strong axle. I'm just wondering if it can hold up to some large tires (42s).

I'm not running that size of tire next but one day I hope. It be nice not to swap both axles again.

a 9 can be built to handle 42 but it will cost some money to do it. best bet would be 60 or 14 bolt. 14 bolt is plenty strong and cheap. if you eventually want to run 42's just swap in the stronger axle now and be done.

A 9" with 35 splined shafts will hold 42s with no issue at all. The 9" will actually handle quite a bit bigger, the pinion is larger than a 60. You can't go wrong with one IMO.

one reason 9" are so strong is because of the pinion support they have. Just get the daytona pinion support as it uses a bigger bearing. Than do 35spline currier, or mosser shafts and you should be alrite. Than i'd truss it to

I wouldnt run a 9" with tires that big, at least not a SF with stock tubes.

I would fully build it before going to that large a tire.

I only plan on 38s to start with.

Why bother? D60's are cheap.

i agree if your already planning on 42's you might as well put it a 60 or 14 bolt. 60 rears are cheap its the front that will cost you some coin, especially the HP fords

Maybe in CA but they are pricey here in the frozen north.

Plenty for sale on this forum at a good price. Building a 9" to be as strong as a stock D60 isn't the cheap way either.

Some guys don't like the D60 because of ground clearancs, but with 42's, that's not a big problem.

Anyway, i'm just throwing the option out there. You're free do do as you please.

Shipping an axle from somewhere in the US to here would be pricey.

I'm not running 42s till later.

For some people, yes. Consider that.
