Done some searching here and saw most recommended the HVLP style guns for painting and many recommended the Devilbiss brand.

I'm a complete amature, having only painted a few things with single stage paint, a tractor, a Cherokee and several pickup flat beds and other odd's and ends.

This will be used for automotive painting, my CJ-7, old tractors, my '56 F-100 street rod eventually.

I figure I'll just be doing primer and single stage paint.

Would this one be a good choice with a 1.5mm tip to do all of the above?

Thats a good gun not Pro quality but fine for your use. I have had good luck with the purple handle HF HVLP. Again not pro quality but fine for the stuff I paint and when they wear out I buy a new one.

I have one of those to do primer work, and am more than impressed for the price. I took a bodyshop program at the local community college a few years ago and ended up getting my own gun because people there seemed to have the idea they didnt have to clean the equipment up after they used it.This way I knew the gun was clean before I started. I dont remember the brand offhand, but paid around $125 in the local paint store. A couple of semesters later the program got some $ for tool alotment, by now I was working part time for the instructor and talked him into getting better guns and making people sign it out whenever they used it so he got a couple of the high $ sata guns. I was spraying a camper top for a fellow and tried it out before anybody left it dirty, and quite frankly, I prefered the one I had for a third of the price because I was used to it. What ever kind you get, pratice on a mailbox or the neighbors dog to get used to it before you spray your first big project.I say if your doing primer work, or metallic paint, step up to a 1.7 at least.

I doubt I'll do any metallic, just primer and regular single stage paint.

I have a Sharpe Finex with the 1.4 nozzle(?). I have applied, with excellent results, just about every type and finish of paint through it, save for any metallics or pearls. It is extremely easy to break down for "thorough" cleaning and Sharpes customer service was top notch (Sharpe sent me a break down tool and some O-rings free of charge).

Regarding that DeVilbiss, I would think it would suit your needs just fine.

I did a lot of reading and it seemed to be about the best gun for the price range..

+1. I have this gun also and I'm very pleased with it. The best part is my local paint store carries every part I could need.

Yep. My local ColorMatch has everything I need for my Finex for those late Sat. afternoon emergencies.

^^ Finex: 1.4 or different size for single stage metallics?

Do they sell the tip & nozzle in different sizes at your local bodyshop places?

I posted earlier that I haven't laid down any metallics or pearls, so I don't really know what size tip/nozzle works best for those paints.

As far as parts availability, my local ColorMatch and independent paint suppliers have never let me down. ColorMatch had different tips 1.0, 1.4, 1.8 for the Finex. I still have some old DeVilbiss siphon feeders and they always have the necessary parts.

I shot some metalic gold onto my volvo and covered it with two part clear. Both shot with the 1.4 nozzle of my Finex. I'm no expert but it came out nice. The metalflake in this particular paint is very fine though so I'm not sure if all metalics could be applied with the 1.4.
