Hey guys, I'm new here on Pirate. I have been on jeepsunlimited for a few years now, so I think I'll be alright. I just got rid of my Wrangler and I'm looking at getting a Scout. I'm thinking about an 80 or 800, Scout 2's are cool too, but I love the smaller ones. A freind of mine in Grand Junction is heavy into Scouts, and I've always liked his tractor. His father in law might be known here, Mark Drumm? Anyway, they have a lot of information will help me on this path. I was wondering, is the Isuzu Diesel that came in the 80 any good? I'm a Diesel mechanic on military equipment and I have thought about using a 4BT Cummins also.

The first Diesel didn't apear in a Scout (II) will about '76 or so (I know someone will fill in the exact date) and it was a Nissan unit. Good, but it has some limitations.


You can swap in any motor you want, the 4BT would be cool.

yeah the nissian engines are alright, found out when i was wheeling with my friend that had one... if you go up steep hills the engine starts pouring out oil:confused: :confused: some type of over flow tube...

if your swappin anyway get an 80.. bit tighter in the engine bay but the fold down windshield is a plus IMHO

Sorry I meant the 1980 Scout II. If I remember right that was the year they were introduced, but I could be wrong. I'm a reformed jeeper, so I still have some to learn about IH.

1980 was the last year for the Scout II. It's the only year for the turbo diesel. The previous years were non turbo.

The scout II had the nissan SD33 3.3L diesel motor from 1977-1980. The 1977-1979 were naturally aspirated, 1980 was turbo'd. i think the N/A had 100HP and the turbo was maybe 110 ish, i think torque was in the neighborhood of 170Ftlbs. It has trouble with any tires over about 33" and will not tow anything but a very light trailer.



i replaced mine with a 6.5TD..but the cummins would be a great swap :smokin: :smokin:
