: Weekend follies???
Mechanos 07-30-2006, 09:32 PM Anybody else get out and bake in the heat? I hooked up with a couple guys from the Twisted Binderz for a little wheelin' trip to a semi-local off-road park. It was so damn hot, nobody seemed to be interested in getting out and taking pics when we were running the trails. We headed back to the staging area around noon and one of the guys (Kevin N.) decided to run into town to get a cold drink and bite to eat. Kevin S. and I stayed at the park and screwed around in the "playground" area while Kevin N. was gone. That's about the only time the camera came out.

We got is straightened enough for him to drive back to the trailer and load it up. Kevin N. and his buddy split up with Kevin S. and I for some more playing on the trails... but again, the camera never came out.
ih4ever 07-30-2006, 09:49 PM well it wasent too bad around here... worked on my shit, and got most of my tranny/ tcase stuff hooked up. all is left is d lines, tranny cooler exhaust and a few other little things, i need it done by next wed. for sierra trek, im gonna be pushin it close...
o and i found that i cracked my frame... who knows when, right on the pass. side front body mount under the pass seat. i guess i hit it pretty hard a while ago and broke something
budget76 07-30-2006, 09:51 PM found out my trucks a fawkin guzzler, and slow as shit. top speed of 65 at 3k rpm's, and 10mpg  i was hoping at least 15:( i'm hoping milage will be better around town. also prepp'd it for a hood scoop, so the 32 36 swap will fit under the hood.
Snoopy 07-30-2006, 10:13 PM Saturday: Installed a K&N FIPK on the tow rig then drove up to DIA to pick up my son from a 2-week californian adventure. The kit made a definate improvement to the 5.4 Triton. I also cut a bunch of 1.5" holes with my holesaw in the fiber/plastic grill backing to give more of a ram-air and cold-air pick up. I got about 18 mpg on the highway and the engine doesn't down shift nearly as much ~ only when hitting the bigger hill, then it has too much and shifts back up. Freaking sweet, now I just need to save for a chip.
Sunday was the normal church get-up. Spent the rest of the day eatin' ice cream cooking bbq wings, watching movies and prep'n for work tomorrow.
Diesel Smoke 07-31-2006, 12:08 AM Friday: After work I had just enought time to come home, shower and pack for my best bud's bachelor party. Started off with steaks and beer at his brother's house, then out toe STARS to really get the games rolling. Had a great time at the club, things were pretty low key when we got there, but by the by the time we left the place was pretty rowdy!! Back to house, chips, salsa, beer and darts till about 3 am. I crashed until about 8, got and drove home. Ate a quick breakfast, showered and headed down to the Great Oregon Steam Up, I was working the afternoon shift. Finished up there at 6:30, then home. Watched a couple of movies with my roomate, ate dinner and went to bed just after midnight.
Sunday: After sleeping 10.5 hour straight through I got up. I don't usually sleep all that long, usually around 6, so sleeping ten is really odd for me, I hate losing my morning. Watched the Formula 1 race, ran a bunch of errands, then cleaned house.
The only thing Scout related I did was pull the crawler off the trailer. Had a little hiccup there. After I fired it up I got no pressure on the oil pressure gauge. I turned it off and went to look for the dipstick. We have to have the dip stick tube capped off in comps, so we usually have the stick in the truck. I looked high and low for it with no luck. Finally I turned it on again, and watch the tube to the gauge fill with oil. With a few thumps it came back to life and showed 50 psi, so it's all good.
Pretty awesome weekend, and it was really nice to let loose on friday. It's been along time since I had done that.:smokin: :grinpimp:
scout254 07-31-2006, 01:19 AM THURS TO SUN :flipoff2:
Rode shotgun to the Jeepers Jamboree at the Rubicon.:blender:
Although I didn't bring my scout(getting it ready for Sierra Trek), I did see a early scout 80 drive through. :bounce2:
Seeing that single scout helped me to tolerate most of the J**P guys. :dustin:
RustoleumWhite 07-31-2006, 08:05 AM Mostly house work and family things.
Mom's B-day on Saturday, and my wife's sister and family came in Sunday.
Did replace a couple of brake lines on the KB, thats about as IH as I got this weekend. Required about 3 trips to 2 different parts houses, they people that work at some parts houses should just be beat. Stripped a MC adapter though, so and other trip to the parts house this afternoon then I might be able to start bleeding the whole thing again (every line on the truck will be replaced that the rate I'm going).
Rained like a mo-fo yesterday. Good, we needed it, but man did it come down. Sposed to be nice again this weekend.
uglyscout 07-31-2006, 08:23 AM Fri: Snuck around the swap meet at Steam up in hopes of some early bird gems... Nothing...
Sat: Toured around Ft. Lewis and the surrounding dumps of towns.
Sun: Picked up yet another PS box, half ass rebuilt it, installed it - dumped another quart of fluid on my garage floor... Pulled it out --- swapped around some parts on my old PS box - reinstalled it, works fine as usual and leaks less than before. Realigned the front end. Tried to log some efi data - only to discover my new inverter doesn't work... So I pretty much batted 50% for the day.
Harvester of Sorrow 07-31-2006, 09:15 AM Spent Tues. and Weds. in TULSA, OK...
After thrashing around Thursday and Friday to get my junk's fuel issues resolved I loaded up my boys and some light camping gear. The plan was to go to Naches (Eastern WA) meet up with two of my best friends and do some wheeling.
WEEEeeeelelllll...Saturday morning AFTER loading up...russel'in shit-head one and shit-head two up to get them ready...The Scout had no brakes. Well it would after about 3 pumps. But next stop...you would have to pump again.
Look around all four corners...no leaks. Then I see that the firewall was just coated in moisture...Peak into rig and see that my master cylinder is leaking from the inside...it must have had sand in its vannannaay
So going to do some searching on the recent MC threads I remember seeing for the best choice for my needs...
As a result of no wheeling I took the boys to the zoo on Sunday....we got rained out :shaking:
Ben W 07-31-2006, 12:21 PM damn man, if its not one thing its another :(

I noticed the front trying to walk out from the picture before reading that it was trying. ;)
How was your pinion angle, and did you verify you have plenty of slip left?
A little more momentum would've put you up and onto those things.. get a little run at it! :D
--
Saturday we made substantial progress on the half-cab floor and rocker replacement - it has a floor now, and a 2x2x.120 rocker, AND the door still fits (whew). Todd needs to put the floor stringers in, a section of floor on the slope over the body mount, and drill holes for his seats again and it'll be 'bout done.
He insists we're just gutting a hunk of plate for the passenger side and spot-welding it to the existing rotten floor and calling it good, tho'.. :D
While Todd did that, I started stripping down the Astro TBI harness I bought - my intention is to put it into my trail rig, though the thought of burning $100 in fuel driving around to do data logging frightens me (and that's just one tank..)
The rest of the steel I ordered showed up Thurday. Now to find the time to build the ramp, but first I need to get my trail rig back up (bent tie-rod/draglink, broken exhaust hangers, and the bearings need repacked are the priority items.. the trashed rockers n' such are no big deal).
he joined us in screwing around in the playground and promptly taco'd his stock SII draglink (he's SOA'd on 36's).
I couldn't get 1.125x.219 DOM for the tie-rod and draglink, and since I bent the 1x.188 DOM currently on the Scout..
I bought more 1x.188 DOM to tap for the 3/4 ends, and then bought 1.25x.109 DOM to sleeve it. So we'll see how 1.25x.297 holds up...
On Sunday we packed the kid up in the Buick and drove 100 miles to pay our last respects to a fellow wheeler that passed away last week. :(
Mechanos 07-31-2006, 01:01 PM ...How was your pinion angle, and did you verify you have plenty of slip left?
A little more momentum would've put you up and onto those things.. get a little run at it! :D
Pinion angle was only about 3° or so (based on my internal opitical angle-o-meter) and there was still about 9" of slip left in the d-shaft. :flipoff2:
The problem with carying to much momentum into is that when the front tires come down the backside of that pipe, the frame bottoms on the pipe at a 90° angle to the surface of the pipe. It's a hellacious bone-jarring hit to drop the frame and bottom it like that.
Harvester of Sorrow 07-31-2006, 02:18 PM damn man, if its not one thing its another :(
No worries...
It is an item that was "eventually" going to be replaced. So it just decided that it wanted to get swapped sooner.
It will give me a reason to add the front and rear electric Line-Lock's now or later...because I will have true dedicated circuits to plumb into.
Looks like I am going to either go with the Mustang MC or the Vette MC...
JustinL 07-31-2006, 03:43 PM Started on the roll cage, I have about 30 feet of tubing in it so far, guess ill have to buy some more.

Heres the rockers. NO, I am not going to keep those bolts for the cage, I am just using them for now because they are free and will line everything up.

budget76 07-31-2006, 08:40 PM Hey Bill, anyone ever tell you you look like Bert from Tremors:flipoff2:
Brandon 07-31-2006, 09:37 PM Mechanos, is that a modified hard top you got there? Interesting..

Next week in the for sale section.... 2006 Rubicon...slightly used...make offer:flipoff2:
Mechanos 07-31-2006, 10:03 PM Yeah, chopped a hard top:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=256865&stc=1&d=1154404914
then used some of the unused portion to harvest some "window channel" pieces to fill in the gaps.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=256866&stc=1&d=1154404914
Then capped the edge with a flange about 1.5" wide to give it rigidity. I don't have a finished pic of that...

Sounds like somebody is sensitive:flipoff2: More seat time and you dont even notice after a while.:D
I spent the whole weekend packing and moving. I finally bought my first house:smokin: Its really overwhelming but its gonna be SO worth it in the end.
I did get my TPS in and solved my wide open stumble, re-bolted my engine back in, tightnend all the transfer case bolts back down. I'm ready for this weekends trail ride.
YellowIH 07-31-2006, 10:11 PM Changed the tranny fluid and installed the mopar deep pan. No leaks when I left. I am another huge fan of the Right Stuff. Using Mobil1 tranny fluid....expensive crap. Hope its worth it...... :shakinghead:
Still shocked by the new motor's sound with the RPT Intake. Sounds like I always thought it should.
Next is to replace all the fluids in the axles and regrease it all. Fun.
guidolyons 07-31-2006, 10:13 PM cool chop on the hard top :smokin:
[QUOTE=Eagle-Mark]found out Rubicon's need a oil pan skid plate.
Nice:eek: I waited a week before wheeling my burb:D
I'm in a mad dash trying to get ready for the sept run. Having to go out of town for work sucks as I need to get a lot of items done.
I chop my old rusty hard top long ago, but it's a lot shorter then Mech's. I wanted something light enough to take on and off. But it's still takes two people to get it on and off without tear stuff up:( You can kinda see it in my avatar

1.35 euro per litre.
that's 3.8 liters to the gal
and currency exchange is about .77...
So you tell me?
$5-6 a gal!
When I get near a base in Germany that has a gas station, it's only .80 euro per litre!!!

No but I do own more then 1 gun!!
And no Reba......
binderbasher 08-01-2006, 08:27 AM Saturday Worked.
Sunday eve had time to wheel for about an hour.
Urban Wheeler 08-01-2006, 10:53 AM Sweated my ass off all weekend.
Finished installing the switch panel, aired up the tires, charged the battery and get it started, put my brake lights back in, cleaned up in the driveway, swapped out a fuel pump in my dad's Mustang in his backyard, and changed the oil in the Jeep.
There's a group of us going to Attica next weekend. Unless someone wants to tow my junk down there I'll have to leave the Scout behind.

I will most likely be riding the newb trails in the Jeep. I don't really want top tow with the Jeep and have nothing else to tow with.

Tahcustomscout 08-01-2006, 08:10 PM Well I just got back from three weeks in the desert. Holy Crap! I went to Fort Irwin for NTC and just got back on Saturday. This was my first time to So Cal, and I wasnt impressed. Hot as hell, no shade, sand storms 122 degrees, sweating my ass off wearing my full battle rattle, and no shower for two weeks. Im glad thats over. Now I can get back to my truck. Getting prepared to do the SOA. Only a few months before I head to the real desert.
ogrescout 08-01-2006, 08:48 PM I went to the dunes and tried sand wheelin for the first time. I really like it. Some lower gears would be nice with a locker but it was still fun. Sunday picked up some metal for sliders for the scout. Should be some fun stuff for the following weekend.
tsm1mt 08-02-2006, 07:00 AM Changed the tranny fluid and installed the mopar deep pan. No leaks when I left.
Will the driveshaft still clear the deep pan at full stuff?
Mine didn't... :(
uglyscout 08-02-2006, 08:11 AM Will the driveshaft still clear the deep pan at full stuff?

I think your full stuff is WAY different than most guys :)
tsm1mt 08-02-2006, 09:04 AM I think your full stuff is WAY different than most guys :)
LOL. It is, but it isn't.
I think a stocker clears the stock pan at full bump because of the skinny driveshaft.
Put a 2" front driveshaft, and I think it'll hit on a stock Scout II at full stuff.
Put a deep pan on, and I think it gets much worse - or at least, much sooner.
OTOH, some of my problems could stem from the Chevy front diff - maybe the pinion is more inboard relative to the spring perch on the Chevy vs a stock SII D44, and that's part of the issue.
Being SOA, the bump stops are actually lowered a lot compared to a stocker for me, but running soft stock springs - and driving like I do - means I fully compress 'em more than someone with a 2" or 4" lift + SOA might.
scout254 08-03-2006, 01:27 AM Well, I just found this.... broken motor mount...:flipoff2:
This was discovered right after I replumbed some of the brake lines near the master cylinder. Of course I'm trying to get ready for the Sierra Trek.:(

Better to have found this now. Looks like it broken very clean, touch it up with the grinder and weld it back together. Since the drivers side it always lifting you might need to weld it on the inside a bit too. Maybe add some baby gussets for more weld area. Are you going up Friday?
scout254 08-03-2006, 09:41 AM I will be at winch hill #1 again this year, volunteering as a guide starting WED 9th. I'm also planning on running the trail twice, starting at Cisco Grove on Sun 13th:grinpimp:
