: Madcowdungbeetle builds a rover...

For the past 8 months or so the dirty hippy has been building his rover in my Garage. He's too much of a pussy to post anything here about it so I thought I would do it for him! Fawkin Pussy. Anyway the Goal of this project was to be able to fit a true 40" tire using pure landrover parts. :D

So lets get to the build-up.

Step 1: meet strange dude in a band on Pirate4x4.com, go see said band and related to strange dude your plans for your disco, be sure to include how many hot chicks said plans will net you.

Step 2: when strange dude says yeah you can use my garage for the swap, don't hesitate to accept.

Step 3: about a year after said offer is accepted announce for the 57th time that you are indeed fully ready to start. Bring Rover to the garage at the beginning of December. Announce that you will be finished by the end of winter break. Dismiss notion from me that you'll be lucky to finished by the end of July.

Step 4: disassemble

Step 5: Place axles in their approximate location, dream about the hot chicks the build up will bring.

Step6: Cutoff wheel and sawzall time...

The Dirty Hippy with the Sawzall:

Next we built the shock hoops, and placed the fuel cell.
http://www.cartertuned.com/swap/DSC05210.JPG

the fuel cell placement isn't perfect eventually (at the moment) the plan is to place a "floor" above it so that it is isolated outside of the passenger space, but untill then with the huge wheel well cutouts and at minimum keeping the front windows cracked we aren't too worried about fuel vapor buildup.

and yes the rear seats still fit with the shock hoops:

Here's Jon being extremely safe with the welder.

USA 6X6 Hummvee Wheel centers, amazingly enough they came on time and were correct. But don't worry Daniel still messed up the order, Jon at the same time ordered O-rings He got o-rings for the 8 bolt wheels not his 12 bolts...
http://www.cartertuned.com/swap/DSC05347.JPG

Rear coil-overs are on, suspension fully welded additional truss added.
http://www.cartertuned.com/swap/DSC05422.JPG

Tires on on the wheels, and the wheels are painted. behind this wheel you can see the vehicle I first rolled when I was about 14. You guys think you're hardcore? I didn't even have a roll cage. :flipoff2:

Front suspension is fully welded and front axle truss is added for hydro assist.

They're Salisbury Axles.

A Salisbury 70 rear out of a ford e-350 van and a Salisbury 60 front out of some Dodge. :flipoff2:

Stock Rover parts right now. He has a couple of x-fer cases he's planning on making a doubler out of.

I'm using the stock motor/transmission/tcase for now. I plan to machine my own crawler box (which will give me 8:1) setup once I have it rolling around. I'll be gearing the axles at 5.38 or 5.86. My friends Disco with the 350 and Stak case is really tempting me though..

My front is adjustable from about 95-115% anti-dive and the rear is adjustable from 75-125% anti-squat.

Do you really get dred locks by just not washing your hair?

sort of not really :flipoff2:

Are there plans for fabbing a rear bumper or something to fill in the rear quarter panels?

Are the enlarged wheel wells going to cause problems for the rear seats?

:flipoff2:

I may do some rear tube work as a temporary thing, but I don't have a rear bumper planned because I still have some major body/frame/tube planned. I'm only trying to get it to a mildly wheelable/driveable state until I get the motivation to get back to fabbing... I'm just ready to drive it!

I will be rebuilding the wheel wells, probably bend and TIG some removable aluminum wheel wells, that I can keep and incorporate into the planned tubework.

The rear seats still fit and bolt in to their stock locations, which means I can carry an additional 3 hot chicks at any time. I dunno why you'd wanna see my ugly hippy mug, but I'll see if I can get some more hot chick pics... I may have a new hot chick for pics soon too :D

DEnd was a little off with this. I'll be adapting a BW planetary reduction unit to the back of the LT230. I'll start on that when I have some more time to spend with the CNC.

Damn, I guess I wasted a lot of time designing a suspension setup with 144 possible setup combinations excluding the link adjustment and coilover valving. :shaking: And I guess my ride height sucks as do 0degree drag link angles.

only have an old dried out set of 35" bfgs for now, but 40s soon to follow.

Well what the hell did you expect from dweeb?? So far it looks like all of the work is pretty solid and thought out. You are actually using decent axles instead of crap, which is the number one cause of shit breaking.

I still think its a hack job since there are no differential lockers in it, but such things are in the works I assume.

Normally, I don't go to rover meets anymore but if you come down, I'll actually show up for SAE. Of course the crew is always up for a tellico run.

What gearing you planning on using? At the end of last year Chris durham put similar axles and 40" under a TJ. He ended up using 7.17s with excellent results. If you are going all out, might as well go all out in every aspect.
