: WJ rear diff swap

Got a question for you guys... I have a 99 GC WJ that I am getting ready to do a 6.5 " lift. I plan on running 35's and 4.56 gears.

Now the question: Instead of spending (or wasting) money on a super 35 kit for rear, I would like to invest that into a better axle for the rear...

Since I am at it, maybe build up a dana60? Im not a ritch guy here. so im looking for a budget swap. I will need to save or remove my brackets to re-use on new diff, but the more I read up on d60 swaps im a bit confused since I have yet to see a WJ using a D60. D60's are real cheap and many types are avilable all over the place.

I guess my stock D35 on my WJ is 63 wide, what vehicle can I look for to snag a rear d60 for this project? I would like to keep rear disks, and wheel bolt pattern is not an issue since I was planning in new wheels...

got welder and tools and such, so I dont mind fabbing...

in the future I will upgrade front D30, but for now i cannot... I rather have one good axle to limp back.

I have also heard there are issues with spedo... WJs read speed from a gear on the axle?

suggestions?

there is no rock climbing in south Florida, just trails that can get narly and peer pressure that might get me into trouble by having to power out of mud.

thanks
Joe

IIRC, WJs share the D35c from a TJ so it`s 60`` if I remember correctly.
Any D60 you put in will have to be cut down to size to match the D30 front unless you want to do a front axle too but like you said you can`t.

I suggest either a D44 or Ford 8.8 (from a 95 and up Explorer, you`ll get disc brakes). Both are excellent axles and will hold up to 35s locked no problem.

Also, I suggest checking out this site, www.mallcrawlin.com

i would suggest the ford 8.8 w/ disc brakes. all you have to convert is spring mounts. and shock mounts. should be able to find matching gears for your stock front also.

Even if you find an explorer 8.8 or, say, an xj dana 44 you will have to redrill the axle shafts for the WJ lug pattern. WJs use a 5x5 lug pattern which is different than just about everybody else. That lug pattern is not very common. I don't know of any stronger axles to swap in with that bolt pattern. Explorers and XJ/TJ/YJ/ZJ use a 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

Two issues come up with this problematic WJ :) . ... Speedo is tied to an axle in the back, not to mention abs.. but abs is not really an issue...

I think I am persuing a Isuzu corp 12 bolt from a 98+ trooper... I think this might be a better fit....

Guys, Im getting new wheels so bolt pattern is not really an issue... In the future I will swap out d30 up front to match....
