Here's your opportunity to help.

We're looking for discussion topics worthy of being a TOTW.

General welding info.

I know a ton can be found in a search, but with all this cage and axle talk, some reminders on how to weld cast, prepare metal, cutting...etc... might come in handy.

Anything on electrical, i.e. ALT swaps, gauges, lighting, batteries..not too hardcore, but stuff that makes the rigs go:)

Well Im looking around for a complete 4.3 with all the computers and such but untill then I need to know how to get the max perfomance out of my carb off road.

I have heard of off road kits and such, I dont know if there would be enough out there to make it a TOTW but I do know many wheelers like myslef do not have the funds for electronic injection just yet and we need to know what to do to our carbs in the mean time.

Don't you know that you can use pipe for a cage if you design it right? :flipoff2:  :D

welding VOTE!

Cast metal welding requires a high nickle content wire, (using a wirefeed) this has more flex where as a normal flux core or not wire would crack from the heat expansion and contraction. A few part numbers would be nice cuase I dont currently have any.

Also Arc welding rods, there are different types, some work good on non clean areas, some have less splatter, some are stronger for BIG frame size welds, I dont know the difference but there is a difference.

VERY IMPORTANT stuff...

I like giving up all the welding knowledge I have hoping that it just might be the guy in front of me on the trail. If he did what we told him to do and not just what looks good then maybe his rig will stay together and not need to be rewelded in the middle of the trail. Almost every trip I have someone ask me to weld something.

So welding is a good one and another one that could help us all out since it is the beginnig of the season is a good parts/tools list to bring. Less is more when it comes to bringing parts so lets list some of the must brings because there seems to be 2 types on the trail, the ones who tow thier roll-a-way, and the ones that say their sh!t never brakes so they don't come prepaired.

One other good one would be the onboard shower.

2. Custom rear disc brakes using off the shelf parts....I got the plans for the corp 14 rear disc brackets would this be usefull to anyone?

3. Front and Rear diff welding..............instead of buying lockers. I've heard alot of people say lately that they prefer the predictivness of a welded diff rather than the unpredictability of a detroit. Comments?

4. List custom mods done to jeeps like tips and tricks stuff such as removable windshield, custom CJ style dash in a YJ, seat swaps, tube fenders.......Anything that works........

In reguards to #3 lincon locker,

Yes it adds more stress on the axle shafts, so
Im a newbie getting info on this hardcore page, WHEN I lincon lock my POS d35 will It brake when driving around town. Rock crawling would be most stressfull, driving on pavement taking fast turns would be second, and driving on dirt roads would have the least stress on the axle.

SO with Cheezie little 32in tires will the d35 lincon locked brake around town if I refraine from doing donuts in paved parkinglots? :barf:

Another good TOTW:
Im looking into buildign my suspension arms, Ive read through the TOTW on suspension but Im more intrested in JOINTS.

Spherical joints (HEIM) Vs Rubber joints?
I dont like my ruber becuase is gets bent out of shape from repeated flexing, And Ive had repeated feedback that Spherical joints "form avalanche engineering" flex well and have good strength, but have a short life for on road drivers.

How many miles can you get out of a good spherical suspension joint? What causes them to fail (vibrations/impact, not flex)?

My plan is to run rubber at my axle mounts to soften the blow to my spherical joints at the frame mount of the arm. I will be doing a 4link radius arm style on my front axle (cherokee) so will have only one spherical joint per side.

I have an excel file for different distributors of spherical gearing joints, prices, specks... how do i attach it to this posting? I can email it.

doing it cheap.

this could be coevered all in one week or you could split it up into different parts for different weeks. like one week axles. what have people done to have a good, beefy set of axles cheap. or motor swaps, or complete build ups.

also there could be:

R&P install
body work (body work in general. plus cutting, bobing, etc.)
coils vs. coil overs vs. 1/4 eliptic.
a do's and don'ts issue
do it yourself diff cover beef
link setups
what tools, spares and recovery gear to take on the trail
tools the adverage joe
can buy to start doing his own fab work (basically shop/garage setup)
which name brand tools to buy and which to stay away from
cheap ulitimate setups

there is always going to be something out there. also after a year or so repetition is not a bad thing. as we all know things are always changing. people are always figureing out new/better ways to do things. anyway these are just some of my ideas.

TOTW suggestion. Here's one that I'm sure a few wheelers are concerned with.

Radiators,
that is a good topic.
1-Some people swear by 3 and 4 core, while others swear by single cored with ripples. (baffles)
2-Optimum size radiators for which rig/engine.
(my general rule of thumb is one sq. in. radiator surface to each engine cu. in.)
3-crossflow vs. downflow.
