Well here it goes and I'm ready to take a lashing. This past winter I hydrolocked my engine. We pulled the plugs shot water out about 20 feet in the air turned it over pumping as much water as possible out and then put plugs back in, changed the oil, and off to finish the trail we went. Of course I had to change all the TB sensors and yada yada. All was fine. Went wheeling this morning and on the way home the engine was running like a dog. My buddy was behind me in his XJ and called me saying I was blowing a lot of smoke. I thought to myself, oh Sh*t gotta get home. Didn't quite make it and now my XJ is sitting on the side of the interstate with a puddle of oil under it waiting on my other buddy and his truck and trailer. Just trying to find out what some of you all would guess the preliminary diagnosis would be, fixable or not, what to look for, etc. Also take into account I can get a new/used motor from a cherokee wreck yard locally for about 600 with 40-60k miles. What would you do?

More then likly the motor is done if there is a hole in the bottom of the pan. its not a pretty thing when you throw a rod at 2grand.
I would replace the motor, pull the head off the old one and have refurbed or junk it.

not that I've saw so far, but I didn't look real close. I left it and hopped in with my buddy to get home and let the wife and kid in the house because lord knows my wife can never remember her house keys

I have twice thrown parts through the oil pan. Neither motor was salvageable. On the one with a cast iron head, it was repairable.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH.....That smarts!
Yeah, you grenaded the motor. Quite possibly you bent or weakened a rod when you submarined it. Then it let loose on the highway.
Pull it out, part it out...save all those expensive bolts, etc...and put another back in it.

Looks like you will be shopping for a new motor. I remeber a few years ago at Tellico I threw a rod through the side of one of my cad motors..It isn't cool at 5,200 rpm to have a rod come through the sideof the motor:eek:

What really sucks is when your driving down the freeway with a motor that only has 1k on it, No noise, no nothing, Plenty of oil pressure, 2500 on the tac and BAM BAM BAM BAM, Pull over.
Only to find a entrance hole in the pan, a bunch of exit holes in the pan and the block, and chunks of your front axle missing from pieces of the rod stuck in it.
