I'm trying to pull the carrier out of my D44 with manual locking hubs. I disassemled the hubs all the way down to bare shafts and am wondering if the axle shafts pull right out. If so how have others gripped onto them in the past? If not what do I need to do to move the axle shafts enough to pop the carrier out? The ring gear is too thick to pull the pinion shaft to get to insides of the axle shafts.

D44 Locking hubs, open diff, 3.21 gears.
Thanks!

You need to take everything including the spindles off. Then the shafts will slide right out.

That's pretty much it...
I'm guessing that you still have the spindles on there which will make it impossible to pull the shaft out.

If the front axle is equipped with a disconnect which it shouldn't be unless someone converted it to manual hubs you will have to remove the left outer axle then slide the left inner axle out to allow the carrier to be removed. If no disconnect then do as the others have said, remove the spindle and slide the axles out. Be sure to vacuum out the axle tubes so when installing the axles you don't get dirt all over them and cause the axle seals to leak.
