With kits as low as $250 is there any advantage to making your own kit?

$250 is a lot of money for the fawkin' shite some vendors call a lift kit.

Buying a SPOA kit is non-intuitive and/or stupid. Kind of like buying prefab sand castles for your trip to the beach.

I've done it - I speak from experience. Never again.

If you got the tools(weldes, grinders and such) build your own. If you have to built it in a driveway with no clue like I did....buy a kit. Make sure, if you buy a kit, that it is complete with everything you need. A set of spring perches is not a SPOA "kit". Research what you want to do and pick the brains of these guys and you'll do fine. I recommend the Trail Tough YJ kit, smooth ride on road and flexy off. Just my .02:D

Ok so I'll just make my own. What are the key parts? I'd be making it for a freind. I have all the machine tools and welders you can shake a stick at.

4 spring pads........2x2x1/4" square tubing 4" long(pass front is bigger)
4 u-bolts(make them a bit longer than stock, or use the stock)
and 1" cold rolled steel for the z-link(steering)
brake lines......drop them down a bit or buy longer lines
drive shafts.....no spacers needed unless you change the wheel base
thats about it.....

Hey Newbie, I really suggest you go somewhere else to do your fact finding.

This isn't the place. Try ORC or Topica.

Hey Fuck-O,

I suggest you go fuck off. I'm a newbie because I don't run a Sammy?? Just because I don't know jack about Zuk dosen't mean crap, it just means I don't run Zuk's. I'm just try to help a fellow 4x4 friend out and I certainly don't need your crap. Thanks for the suggested site, but I've already been there. This is just one of the many useful boards out there.

Fucking jackass, there everywhere.

Ok...flame me if you must but I have to ask a few questions.

Is this really all thats required for a basic SPOA? The part I'm most curious about are the drivelines, no mods are needed if you don't extend the wheelbase? How about shocks, just reuse stock shocks? New mounts needed?

Appreciate the response. Yes I do check the other boards but I trust most of you guys a whole lot more (other boards seem to like to throw money at a problem, here theres actual thinking going on). My plans are to do a simple SPOA and then after a bit do the YJ conversion.

Drivelines...
If you just do a SPOA conversion with basic perches - no. If you build (or buy) perches that give you added lift - maybe. Twist it up and check your drivelines for excessive travel.

Shocks...
If you re-use the spring plates in the back, they leave the shocks in about the same place in relation to the spring (just moves the thickness of the spring pack). I usually use an aftermarket shock mount up front to make it easy, so yes, new shocks up front would make things easier. Go to the local car parts store and pick up a set of Gabrial 'Red Riders' for about $10 each...

Hope this helps a little.
