Has any body ever seen or done an old camp trailer conversion into a toy hauler? I see old camp trailers for cheap if not free that work or might need some upolstrey work. I can't see spending a fortune to buy a toy hauler. I would only use it maybe 3 times a year. Why not just cut the back off of an old camp trailer and put a fold down ramp on it?

look at the frame of those cheap trailers and the construction of the walls and try to figure out how it would really hold up to having a wall cut out.....

Nothing is impossable though................. :)

Ive done such a conversion myself. Seemed like a great idea at the time.
I bought a 34 ft 5th wheel travel trailer that had been hit on the ass end. I then cut the damaged rear end off ( about 24" total).
Then I looked and shopped around and bought an entire rear door with frame etc of a rv dealer for a toyhauler ( the kind with the springs on the outside )
I used a bunch of 1 1/2 square tubing and it went fairly easy. The hardest part was relocating the furnace and sink further forward so there would be more room in the rear of the unit.
I soon realized the flaw in my plan when I loaded a jeep in the back and the whole rear ( behind the axles) section of the frame started to bend.
After that even with generous extra bracing is was still real weak.
I was gonna just set the unit on top of a gooseneck but the cost of the " extra" trailer didnt make sence. I sold it to a buddy ( for less than the cost of the parts i had allready purchased) who only hauls quads and after about 2 years it started to just fall apart.

During construction i should have known better. The walls and roof of these travel trailers are just 2 x 2 wood with thin sheeting to cover. The floor was 1/2 or 5/8 plywood. And the real problem is the frame itself. If you look there is only 2 small channels front to back and s shaped bent sheetmetal maybe 1/8" acting as the crossmembers.

So the moral is YES its possible ,but from my experience not at all practical.

The rig I use now I built Using a 28' Haulmark thrifty hauler.
Once I added a Home Depot shower and did a little framing inside now has sink, hot water , toilet, 100 gal fresh water, 40 gal black and grey tank and on and on.
Not nearly as nice inside as a real travel trailer but works really well and is gonna hold up good as its allready rated and built for more weight than i ever haul inside it.

I use one regularly. I put a 3" channel framing on top of the original frame and haul about 6000 lbs on it. My longest trip so far was over 5 hours each way and it did fine. I have ramps, but I don't used them to load or unload. It's more fun without the ramps.

He wants to convert to a toyhauler not a flatbed.

Thanks everybody. I am not all that handy at pluming in new sinks, showers, etc., so it will have to wait.
