Found a RC60 at the yard. Ball joint style. Problem is the truck looks like a burnt piece of toast. :nuke: Even the Weld aluminum wheels were melted. Should I pass on this thing or should it be alright. What could be damaged besides the seals, lockouts? It might have gears (4.56, 5.13's, am i dreaming) in it too because it looked like a offroader/mudbogger??? Guy wants $300 for it.

Are the King pin style d60s more desirable than the ball joint styles? I am going back tomorrow to get a measurement of the WMS to WMS (and check it more in detail) when they pull it. It is under a '94 F-250 which should be independent front for that year, no? Thats why I think it is a custom build??? We will see.

There were some 3/4 Fords that were "HD". They came with solid axle fronts. I think that most of the Diesels were HD solid axle trucks.

You missed out on some good wheelin' last weekend. Remember, I asked you if you wanted to go. Here is a picture of my Jeep at the competition.

Also, check out-

It is a Michigan short wheelbase off-road club, pretty cool.

I got the front axle under my YJ the same way only I paid $100 for it. I bought all new bearings, seals, king pins etc. The only issue you may have is if a seal is damaged it may have pitting in the seal area of the axle shaft because of the relatively clean metal exposed to heat and water. I had to replace my short side shaft but the long side was fine.

You might try going lower on the price. How many people actually buy complete axles from salvage yards? How many people are willing to take a chance on a burned axle?

Take cash and be prepared to walk away if he doesn't meet your price.

There is a preference for the king pin style axle (me too). In my opinion that makes the ball joint style worth less.

Jeep? Where is the yota? Looks like fun. Our club had a swapmeet that same day. I had a trailer full of parts and by the time I got out of there there was no time for me to make it up there. Let me know of any other wheelin up there, maybe I can make it up there.

I dunno about that. I have *never* seen a 80-97 F250 with a straight axle. Diesel or not. Heard rumors like this.... but that's it.

It's an easy enough swap. Bolts right up. But Ford never made them that way for those model years.

I think all this got started with the 78/79 F250 SnoFighter trucks that got D60s...

sclemons:

I've heard a lot about the "Snofighter" option on the 250's leading to a 60 Front but I've seen at least a dozen 60 fronts that came on "Camper Special" trucks. Have you ever heard of this package?

I also bought a 60 front from an '87 Ford F250 which according to the title was an 8600# truck. I have no way of knowing if the axle was swapped in. I believe it's almost a direct bolt-in but I've never done it personally.

The 86-97 F250's were all TTB some were HD D44 and some were D50....but all were TTB. A D60 from a 86-97 F350 is pretty much bolt in, even all the holes for the trackbar and swaybars are pre-punched in the F250 chassis.

The Camper Special was also a pre-80 option package. I have no firsthand knowledge of what came under them, but it's possible. After '80 and before '98, they're all TTB from Ford.

seems like all the front 60's i find arround here are burnt...

examples:
2 HP Fords 1978(200$), 1979 (100$) (bent)
1 Dodge 1998 (50$)

there was only 1 of the 3 that was bent (i retubed it when i turned the knuckles (gettin the tubes out of the punkin was a bitch)
