View Full Version : Separating bearings from carrier...

Well after messin' around with my D60's and installing 5.38's in them, I have been wondering what the heck people use to seperate the bearings from the carrier.

I have one of these:

and it works great for carriers that have a small notch where it installs. But my front D60 didn't have the notches, so I tried using one of these (with the proper puller):

The old bearings were so darn tight on the carrier, that the cage holding the bearings in place essentially exploded and spit out the bearings nuggets all over the place.

So now, I'm at the "there's gotta be a better way or a better tool" out there.

Any thoughts?

IIRC in an article here in the tech section there is a review on a bearing puller on there that fits over the bearigns all the way around.

EDIT:

Anyone use one of those alot, I was just curious as how well they hold up. Looks basically like the steering pump pulley puller.

Friend of mine who works in a shop has one. Uses it several times a week and loves it.

I use mine 3 days a week for 4 years now. It has been an AWESOME addition to the tool collection.

if you get the big bearing splitter and then place it in the press you can get 90% of bearing off, but if the cage is already busted just carefully cut the inner part with a dremel or wiz tool and then it will tap right off

or, you can take it to a napa or some shop with a big press and have em press it off for ya...they will most likely do it for free too.
