Looks sweet Lance. I love the look of swampers when the center lugs are cut like that. By the way, if you don't mind, how much did that groover set you back? I have a friend that is interested in one.

$58 for the groover, and a second tip, and a ton of blades.

Cool, that is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Maybe he and I will split the cost and get one. Is AFCO racing close to where you guys are, or did you just mail order it?

Looks good Lance! Be careful though its almost as addicting as the sawzall! :D I got my groover from the same place and I have cut 5-tires so far on one blade and it's time to replace it. However I have been told that if you cut the center part out of the blade you can keep using it to sipe tires so I might do that too.

does the grooving really help?

i grooved my 44" Boggers and it seems to behave as before:(

if it's that good, why does'nt Interco consider selling grooved tires in the first place?:emb:

Or won't run 'em period because you keep breaking sh!t

They ended up paying out at ERocC and it wasn't too bad for a first event.

1st- $600 and a set of 37" MT/Rs
2nd- $350
3rd- ?????

Will you be back in June BAJG, will your jeep be the same, or are you going to try to stretch it before then:question: if you want Buddy's number for any questions just let me know.

Oh yeah, the tires look good:D

I grooved my SX's in a very similar pattern and it made a great difference. The tire wraps around rocks better and get's a better bite. IMO- the tread just seams to flex better.

As far as WHY to groove tires, there are a couple reasons. First, you get more biting edges for the rocks. Second, is that it allows the tire carcass to flex more, and wrap around a rock better. Mike did an experiment with a 36" SX. He parked on a 4x4 peice of wood, and measured the distance of the tire (that was hanging over the edges of the wood) to the ground. Then he grooved the tires, and measured again. The tires wrapped around the block and was an inch or two closer to the ground.

This is also a good way to get good lateral traction with a Bogger.

Hmm... Something I need to do too.

Looks like you changed your mind on the pattern after a coupe lugs.

Lance, how deep did you groove yours?
I only grooved mine like 1/4" into the tread. I wonder if I just added more biting edges....

For what it's worth, I did my fronts like this:
http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/trails/LBL-04-19-02/body4.JPG

And my rears like this:
http://home.off-road.com/~mithrandir/grooving/groove02.jpg

I haven't been able to tell the difference between the two on my 36x12.50 TSLs... Except that at 9PSI they actually flex, wheras before it took around 5 to get them to flatten out. I Grooved mine so there was ~1/8" of rubber left before I was cutting into the carcass.

I grooved them about halfway through. The center lugs were done with a #5 blade, and the sides were done with a #2.

I bought both that same groover and a siper...the siper uses the exact blades but turned around and it doesn't have heat...other than that it looks the exact same...FWIW

Thanks for the tip on the groover. Sweet unit, they shipped it quick and at a fair price. Best of all it works great and isn't a full on workout to use it. :smokin:

I'm guessing, with Boggers, 'cause they're already pretty marginal on DOT legality with as little rubber as actually hits the pavement as they've got. The common mudrace thing is to just cut all the little lugs out completely, then they're pretty much paddles, but I wouldn't want to do too much technical rockcrawling with that setup. My unmolested Boggers work pretty well, although I've ripped the (formerly) nice sharp front edges off of all mine, on the rocks. Oops.

As for TSL's, I'm not real sure, but I'd say 'cause they've been the same for however long, and everybody has their own way of grooving them. Since so many people run 'em un-grooved, I'd say they probably sell more as a "groovable" tire, than they'd sell as a "pre-grooved for competition use" tire.
