Karl,
I sent them yesterday. Once you get them you decide id you want to keep em. I scribbled a note at the last minute, hope you can read it!

I got a set of Aisins off of a mini truck (I am assuming that they are the same as on the fj60s) and they fit on my 78 fj40. The thing is is when they are tightened down they are bound and the selector dial doesnt turn, if you loosen the bolts some, the dial will turn. What I figure is happening is that the inside end of the lock-out is rubbing on the birfield stub. This is happening because either 1)the fj40 birf is longer and sticks out of the spindle futher than a fj60 2) or that since the fj40 knuckle is smaller, the birf stub sticks out of the spindle further and binds up on the inside of the hub (this is what I think is happening) The three solutions that I have come up with (not yet performed), 1) Make a shim to go between the lock-out and rotor/hub, which will probably leak, 2) have some material taken out of the the inside end of the lock-out, 3) grind down the end of the birf stub. The reason I havent done this yet is I dont really like any of these Ideas. Let me know how it turns out.

Rick.

you won't have any problems, they will fit fine. Just don't try putting hubs from an IFS truck on your Cruiser. They aren't even close

It depends on what month 78 you are talking about.
The later ones are exactly the same but the earlier ones are not.

The primary difference is the length of the outer stub.

If you really want to run them go get a set of mini birfs. They are stronger anyway...

There was a change in Birfield stub length that will prevent it from fitting properly. The stub axle will bind in the end of the selector dial and bottom out on the splines of the inner part of the hub. The internal dimension of the hub are different(less room for the stub axle in the later hubs. I could not use the mini truck ASCO hubs(same as FJ60's) without the binding and backing off the bolts will cause grease to fly out and cover the wheel.

Like Jason M said, just pull it apart and throw a set of longfields(mini truck ones) in to it...

Thanks

Sounds like some different experiences here. I will post my results.

Thanks Mike

FYI

Put the FJ60 Aisin hub on last night. Fit just dandy with the longfield. Superior hub for suuuure.

So the conclusion is:
The solid axle mini truck and fj60-62 locking hubs are the same physically, as are the birfs. The wheel hub itself (40's on) is basically the same as far as this is concerned, and if using later, or mini birfs these locking hubs will work.

IFS locking hubs will not work, nor will the very similar Sammi hubs. Correct me if I am wrong here!

Zog's problem then may be that he has IFS locking hubs, or needs to get some solid axle mini birfs!

The Aisins will fit 79 and later FJ40, all FJ60, and all solid axle mini truck. The reason they fit on the longfields is because they are mini truck birfs. If you had stock 78 birfs you would have been SOL.

How's the strength on 60 series Aisin hubs compared to Warn premium hubs?
