My buddy has a '96 F-150 that the front driver-side makes a clunking noise when in 4WD. It is a stock truck with I believe a Dana 44 that has locking hubs. It works fine in 2WD but when he locks the hubs in it clunks when turning either way while moving. Do you think it may be the hub or the outer u-joint? How can we check the u-joint, it all looks fine, we have not tore it apart yet.

Thanks for any advice.

Check the ujoint first.. It will be obvious if its that.......

Could also be a limited slip unit releasing. Try to jack up a front tire with the hubs engauged and spin the tire by hand with the t-case in N. See if this shows you where the problem is.

U joint, hubs not locking right, or the wheel bearings are shot.

ive got a '93 with auto hubs that does the same thing. ive heard that it is probably the limited slip. someone else told me that it could be broken spider gears or spider shaft. i havent had time to tear mine apart, so for now, i just pretend like i dont hear the noise.

well on my 88 with 35's after time and wheeling i could turn to the right and i would hear a nock. I also thought it was a hub or something however it turned out to be a cracked frame:eek: behind the steering box. but that just what my problem was. this can be determined by looking at the steering box while someone turns the wheel. if the box moves you have a problem.
