I'm helping set up my rearend for my FJ60. It is a 10/85 and uses the crush sleeve. I have a new crush sleeve. I'm using a matched set of used 4.10s out of 78 40. I'm installing an ARB air locker. The mechanic says that I need shims to install the Pinion. Neither this 4.10 or my factory 3.73 was shimmed. Do I need them? Any help, words of wisdom etc... would be greatly appreciated. Note: I live in Idaho so Toyota shops who install ARBs don't grow on trees. We don't have a specialist to take to here.
Thanks!

When I set up my rear end, I was told by a toyota mech that it was either a crush sleeve or shims to get the correct pinion bearing pre-load. If you are using the crush sleeve, you shouldn't need the shims. (Is presonally used the shim method because that is what I had originally)
Doesn't really matter how you get the pinion preload as long as you get it, and the gear pattern is good, you are set.

Eric, we have a good shop for that. Jim's Driveline can do your rearend with the ARB. He's also smart enough to know that you don't need shims with a crush sleeve. It'll cost ya though.

Crush sleeves are :rainbow:
If you use a sleeve, every time you have the flange off to change a seal or change flanges you need a new sleeve to set the preload or you are guessing about it. Even if you had a sleeve, you can still set the preload with shims.
Ya set it and ya fugetit.
