Did you post this on binderbulletin yet? There are more of the right kind of people to help with this over there. Good luck, those aren't very common.

Have you tried Randy's Ring and Pinion?? If they can't get it or don't know about it, there's a chance it might not exist ;D

You may be stuck haveing custom made if you can't find one anymore. Really shouldn't be *that* expencive. By a short-side inner blank, then find a spliner (if you don't know one local there are good shops all over) and have them cut to match. Should be under $200 total, depending on what you get the blank for. Figure $75-$100 for the custom machine work.

Custom made? Wouldn't it be closed knuckle?

Have the shaft custom made. Doesn't matter whether the housing is open or closed knuckle...

It's also possible that some Dodge D70 fronts used the same shafts. The Power Wagon boards would be the place to check.

how the hell did you break a D70?

Put an u-joint shaft in a closed knuckled housing? How are you going to seal it?

I don't follow you...

Some closed knuckle front axles have birfield joints (Toyotas), others have tracta type joints, still others have a joint that starts with an 'R' (Rapezda or something similar), and most non-Toyota closed knuckle fronts (like the D27 and D44 closed knuckle axles under my 67 Scout 800 and '71 3/4 ton 4X4 IH pickup) have u-joints. The closed knuckle seals against the 'hollow ball' section of the housing regardless of what type of steering joint is inside it...

I finally got A response from Madison outback,he wants $269 for A new stub axle(ouch).Im told if it was the spline count used later on it would be $60.So now im going to look for A locking hub to match.Ive called all over on this and only found that one axle.So upgrading to an easier to come by part would be better in case this happens again. And yes,its A closed knuckle.I was told the only difference is the rubber seals used on the grease zerk type.Just leave them off when putting the u-joint into A closed knuckle.
As far as how the axle broke, long story. Some Rubicon guys guided me right onto A rock that took out the rear drive shaft. After that I was trying to make it up the hill with the front only and some Toyota guys tried pulling me up.They were spinning wheels,I was spinning wheels and as soon as the front left grabbed A root it stopped. With A Detroit Locker front I knew something was broke.I would actually have been better off without any help.I was more patient than they were. And ya stupid enough to listen to them.Lesson learned.

I again urge you to check out the PowerWagon folks. Locking hubs for those axles are always pricey however. Drive flanges are much more common and available. You might as well get the cheaper stubs for both sides along with a set of drive flanges. Carry your one remaining $$$ stub and its matching locking hub as a spare.

I'd give John at Border Parts a call, he seems to have parts for everything IH in his shop. If he doesn't have it he will know where to find it.

Ok,
I called Randys Ring and Pinnion,Coonrods and many more. One keeps referring me to another, and nothing.I tried Binder Bulletin in the past and saw no activity there,so I dont try them anymore. As far as custom made, the only blank I could find was Chromolly and cost $109.Rand Machine in Fresno wanted $200 to shorten and spline it.So,that puts me over the new cost.Tell me where I can get it done for less. The new type U-Joint im told is perm sealed and needs no grease zerk and am being told to use that.Doesnt matter if its open or closed knuckle.Drive Flange? Would I want that with A Detroit Locker?Wouldnt the steering be funky all the time?I think I would at least need to disconnect one of them. And,I looked into Power Wagon Stuff.I asked 'wouldnt D70 be the same whatever its under?"The answer I got was. They couldnt agree on the axle length, otherwise its the same.UGH!And now the guy that said he A 35 spline axle for $60 is saying its different.I called him back and he took A closer look at the measurements.Thats the way im shopping now is by size.Sounds like if I could find A 30 spline locking hub, theres one that might work.I havnt heard that 30 spline was used though. For now im driving the truck with no left front axle, went into Brewer Lake last weekend.Still got power to three wheels and can still go through the stuff.

You mean the M715 right? IIRC those are closed knuckle D60s. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they are the same as the closed knuckle D70s however...

With the TC in 2WD (such as on the street) the detroit won't give you any trouble at all (aside from the clicking noise). You're already used to the behavior of the detroit in 4WD. Disconnecting one side doesn't keep the detroit from driving the other side. You found that out at Brewer Lake last weekend.

Man, for the longest time there was a guy selling a D70 set (F&R) from a Dodge on Craigslist for $300.

Oh well.

Thanks creepy, M 715

You might check out ebay also, whole axles show up from time to time. They don't go for much, and frankly for their weight it doesn't pay to go through the trouble of pulling and selling them.

I haven't seen shadowman post in a while, he is running a front 70 and may have some spare parts. Search out his username and send him an email.

Try a place called Spare Parts & Equipment (859)266-2188. I just ordered a set of unobtanium external 35 spline locking hubs for a D70 from them. They may have the stubshaft you are after as well.

Here's his profile:

His name is actualy two words: Shadow Man. Check out his rig description. He has a closed knuckle D70 front as a rear-steer axle. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a line on D70 spares...

Have you called Dutchman? I think they can make any axle shaft you can think of.

If its going to be this big of a pain & $$$ anytime you break an axle, it might be worth either swapping in a modern dana 60 front OR figuring out a way to run 35 spline junk on yours... I know that is possible as there was an article floating around a while back that concerned a dana 60 M715 35spl. front conversion-- it was $$$ & a fair amount of work, but doable nonetheless.

Just food for thought. Good luck!

I sent A message to shadow man,and also found A place that has A bunch of the axles im looking for(spare parts and equipment). His price is about the same as the other guy and he has them because he makes them.Thats what they do there. He finds something people are after and makes up A bunch of them.Im about ready to give up and fork over the dough(probably Thursday or Friday). If A better deal comes up later, that can be A spare. Thanks again for the help.:p

I sent the Binder Bulliten guy A message and yes I called Dutchmen. They had something similar that would have had to machined or A 30 spline axle for $58.And I am definately looking at upgrading to easier to come by stuff.
