My Brother has an 87 Ram 4x4. It has a 440 and an auto with an all time 4wd t-case. I know the front is a CAD dana 44 which we are planning on replacing, but what back axle? I believe is a 9.25, but am not sure if its has been replaced since I doubt a 440 came stock in there.
The axle is 5 lug, low pinion, 12 bolt, the tubes step dowm bw the diff and the outters. I will get some pics up tomorrow.

440 and full time 4x are sure not stock in a 1987; in any event, the rear axle is a Chrysler Corporate unit.

If it is 5 lug, semi floating with a stop sign shaped cover, then it is a 9 1/4" Chrysler Corporate axle. 12 bolt means virtually nothing since the bolt counts are for the ring gear, not the cover which is a common misconception.

I know, just tryin to figure it out.
Did they come stock with 440s?
But yes its a semi-float, sorry I meant to say that and the cover is stop sign shapped

I'm pretty sure they did come stock with the 440s. I know of one factory 440 Ramcharger in the late 70s that had the 9 1/4.

440's Stopped Being Put Into Production Vehicles In 79' Or 80' And Even Then It Was Only In Motor Homes. They, Actually Stopped Production Of 440's In 77' Or 78', If I Recall My Mopar Facts Correctly.

The only Ramcharger to recieve a 440 was the '74, and it came with the standard dodge setup - dana 44 and 9.25

That's funny - I've got a '77 with a factory 440, D44 front and 9.25 rear. Even my local smog guy agrees that it's factory.

The Mopar Parts Manual lists the 440 in the W and AW body through the 78 model year.

I had a 1978 Ramcharger parts truck with 440. Look for a "D" in the 6th place of the VIN.

Yeah, he probably rode under the hood of more than a couple of Ramchargers equipped with factory 440s coming across the border every day.:shaking:
