I see that some Rovers came stock with the Isuzu diesel 4BD1.....I recently bought this engine for a non-rover coversion and it came with a bellhousing that fits the engine with a Ford NP435 transmission (only 4 speed)...it had an auxillary transmission for the overdrive....I wanted to know if any of you know if any of you have experience with 5 speed transmissions for this that are not the Rover LT??? like the NV4500 for example??? I know that it is fairly simple to mount a chevy automatic transmission with overdrive but I wanted to try to stay manual.
Not alot of choices to find information on this engine as they are usually in NPR trucks not 4x4's...

I've got the isuzu MSA-5P, five speed in my RRC.
But that's not going to help you.

If you can find a manual NPR then the gearbox from that will work well - they are very strong, and available in 5 and 6 speed variants. They are cable-change though, so you need to get a shifter and cables from a manual car and fab something up.

What do you do for a transfercase, if you use the NPR engine?

There are better options. But here's my setup.
Take the back end off the gearbox, machine up an aluminium block to fit between that and the last extension of the previous LT77 5sp.
Custom shaft from gearbox spline to the same output the LT77 originally had.
LT230 bolts up to that in the stock location.

Can't think of better transfer case options, but fitting it could be done much better than mine.
Losing the last part of the LT77 box and replacing it with a hollow fabrication (think steel pipe with flanges) would be tidier and leak less. It could also let you keep the factory back end of the Isuzu box.
1:1 high ratio would be advisable if you do much highway work.

I was thinking about using a Rangie or Disco t-case anyway.
Those cases bolt flush up to the end of the tranny.

Well, if the engine has a bellhousing to fit a Ford version of the NP435 you should be able to locate an adapter to the NP4500.
A good place to look for adapters is Novak adapters http://www.novak-adapt.com
You should also be able to come up with an adapter to go from either gearbox to either the Dana 18 or a late Land Cruiser transfer case. Both have the right offset for Land Rover axles.

Excellent, a bolt up auto that can handle this engine.
