: Running Exhaust Outboard of Frame Rail

Anyone have their exhaust outboard of the frame rail? I need room under my rig for the ladder bar, and my exhaust is really in the way. It might make my muffler a little more vulnerable to rocks and such, but are there other negatives?

And, NO I did not search :D

BWAHAHAHAHHAAHHAAHA  Why do people do that?!

Yes it is a major Jeep thing but I dont even understand. Do they run the exhaust that way so their rig looks better infront of the single wide trailor?

As to Hoopers question:

I would keep in inside the frame rails by using a single 3" exhaust with a small muffler. Outside the frame is gonna get thrashed.

I don' t have pics, but Thebert's exhaust runs outboard of the frame, exiting the frame just behind the RS shackle and then putting the mufflers under the passenger feet area, or back a bit more I guess (you think your floor gets hot now? Hah!)

Hey, Pat.. how about some chrome side-pipes just above your rocker guards?

or STACKS!! :D

That was about my suggestion and where I think I'll end up, too.

Run 2.25" exhaust back just behind the tranny, curve it under the rear output of the t'case, Y it together, and run a single 2.5 or 3" muffler on one side between the frame and driveshaft, with a single tailpipe.

Leave you plenty of room for a ladder bar, Pat.

And you'd only have to buy one muffler and one tailpipe.. and I know how much you like to spend money - almost as much as I do..

Yep. Just like that, but, I thought I would run them a little lower, to act as sliders... <g>

Aside from concern over them getting whacked, which I really couldn't care less about right now, any negatives...

Aesthetically, mine will be high enough you won't see them without climbing underneath...

Not even that much, especially since I have a brand new $1500 tooth to pay for...

arent you doing a shackle ended ladder?

if so by having a longer shackle and a shorter ladder arm I'd think you could avoid reaching forward to the cross member. and still have plenty of travel.

I'v often considered going SOA with a tension shackle in the rear to get rid of my SUA shackels hanging down.

but with a torquey 392 i know I'd have to kill some wrap

I many a times laid under my truck pondering just such a ladder bar .

the shorter arm would negate all the ehaust changes

unfortunatly, no it wouldn't... at least with the exhaust's him and I have... the back side of the mufflers are even with the step.... so they are right were any bar would come through....

I'm thinking the single... but I like duels sooooo much.... and is seems like a cop-out to split them again after the muffler..... but I have thought of it....

Hmmm, someone should e-mail Thebert and see if he has any pics of his exhaust... and how its been working out for him.....

here's my exhaust:

that is EXACTLY like mine.. turns up and out through the area between the frame sweeping up for the rear axle arch and the step.

How about moving the mufflers forward, closer to the t'case? I hadn't thought of that yet, but it looks like there's room..

Bill does have pics, but I don't know where.. I've seen 'em before.

my H pipe connector is right behind my transfercase and then I have shorty terminators behind that with centered outputs.

my next ones will be offset in and out to keep them even closer to the frame.

but I still seam to have room for a ladder

I'm thinking of doing a ladder that is Y shaped from the tubes a inch under the pinion and driveshaft. to a big long shackle around the drive shaft .

hanging it on its own crossmember.

then I'd get all the anti wrap I'd need plus total driveline protection.

the lose in clearence would be negated by the 40" tires I'd have to add

Hmmm, that might work... Have to put a tape on it again tonight.

Part of the problem, is the inboard exit of the mufflers. I *might* be able to flip them over, however, since they are center entrance. Then, they would be outboard exit, and I might have room for the bars. Still have to do some hacking and patching of the pipes though. Can you say flex pipe to the rescue? <g> Course, all this assumes I can get the clamps open and the pipes loose from the muffler..... no guarantees on that. And, sooner or later I am going to have to replace the whole exhaust system anyway, since I have 1 7/8 ID pipes. What does 2 1/4" exhaust pipe run? Ideally, I would pick up a pc with a flange on one end, and head over to someone close by here with a pipe bender and bend to fit ;)

Have to use shorter ladder arms, and we have been aiming for *longer* arms rather than shorter. *Most* folks recommend the longest arm possible to avoid lifting in the rear under heavy climbing torque. This coming from a couple folks who make and have run ladder bars... I think the way to go is *as long as possible/reasonable*

Maybe I will have time to crawl under there tonight and get dirty....

BTW, Rusty, drive backwards on the trail much? Nice dent in the diff cover....

Got a thick cover back there now.... or is it a thin one ?!?... what ever, it's nicely painted and not dented or scratched <g>

(that was back when I had 3:31's as well :barf: :barf:)
