I have to rebuild an A-904 this week - got the kit, no problem, but the directions I have say to use some grease for assembly and startup lubrication. For manual trannys I use wheel bearing grease. But not sure what type of grease is OK for mixing with ATF.

Thanks

Petroleum jelly, vasoline, this will hold everything together
and it will disolve when it starts up
use it to hold the check balls in place

Yup, Vasaline, or called in the auto tranny bussiness Butt butter (theres is vasaline mixed with some red line cam greese)
so stop wacking and build up the tranny

Thanks much guys. Funny thing is I have about 9 types of grease at home, but no vasoline - guess I'll be stopping by the drug store on the way home.

The guy I used to work for used STP. I'm sure vaseline would work too though.

Toss it into the freezer so it will hold those check balls in during assembly. Of course when my g/f spotted the Vaseline in the freezer and I commented "leave it in there, it needs to be STIFF" She didn't stick around for an explanation.

Oh you're in MN, probably just leave it outside. :D

Yup, Vasoline....
Just teaching my advanced H.S. auto class how to do trannies last week....

Every year I cringe when I have to tell 17-18 year old guys about the vasoline thing.

It isn't really to lubricate, mostly to hold stuff in place for assembly.

Also, do not clean your parts with parts washer fluid that is holding grease in suspension from all your wheel bearings etc. as well as metal particles....

Use clean fluid.

When I cleaned the case and everything else tonight I used kerosene, it was pretty clean but not new. I'm going to wipe it all down with alcohol before re-assembly, mainly to get the kerosene resedue off. I should mention that I'm not taking the valve body apart at all. the tranny was in good shape, but I had to take it apart to swap the output shafts and tailhousing. Needed a 2wd tranny, could only get a 4wd tranny and the case on the old tranny was trashed.

Thanks for the tips, should be able to assemble everything tomorrow. The only reamining pain will be drilling for the CPS. New tranny didn't have one, but that's a minor problem.
