How thick should I pour my slab in preperation for a future lift?
Majority will be 4". with radiant tubing, so I need to plan for this

Any one have some good experiences with a under slab insulation?

can I run cat 5 500' and maintain a signal with out any problems?

I would think that depends on what you are lifting. You might just need to thicken where the poles will be for the lift, if it is the pad type then I would thinken it to 5" maybe 6" where the lift will be and put some rebar in.

Also check with the tubing people they may let you know if you will have trouble with their product with a lift over it.

I am about to do a shop also but Im not going to worry about a heated floor.

Cat 5 is good to 300' after that you will start to lose performance. You will still get a signal but Im not sure what you loses will be at that distance. Are you trying for network speeds or are you just running it for a phone line/DSL?

Phone/DSL - you *may* be ok at 500'.

Network - I wouldn't trust anything over 300-350' for a reliable connection. If you need network that far, I'de go fiber and a couple media converters. The limit for 10Mb or 100Mb over copper is 100 meters. Only way to do copper is dropping a repeater in half way down the line.

At over 328 ft (100meters) of cat 5 timing becomes an issue and usually you have trouble maintaining any kind of signal.

Wire a switch in somewhere inbetween your run and you'll be fine.

I would want to pour the lift pads thicker and keep the tubing away. I would also put zip strip around the pads to isolate them.
