: Steering: Box or Pump

I need some help guys. Here is what I am dealing with.

I did an engine swap in my '97 TJ this spring. I put in a 4.3 Vortec. I am running the AGR rock ram kit with Flaming River Steering shaft etc. Since the swap, I have been through 3 AGR steering boxes and 1 PSC Box. With all 3 of the AGR boxes, when it goes, it jerks the wheel out of my hand and I lose all steering. With the PSC box, the front seal went bad (they replaced it and are sending it back).

Now to me and others, this is odd that I am having so many problems with steering. Could something else be wrong to be causing the boxes to take a shit? Could it be the pump?? My guess would be that its not the pump only because every time we change the box, everything goes back to working correctly. If it was the pump and we changed the box, the problem would still be there, correct? We just put this new AGR box on last week and it didn't even last a full week! As soon as we put it in though and I turned the wheel I felt a spot while turning the wheel that felt odd. Could this have been an indication that this box was junk?

Any help or suggestions would be super duper! Thanks guys!!

You need to replace any old hoses and completely flush the system, any time you replace any PS components. Any little bit of crud that's in there will be waiting to destroy the seals in whatever shiny-new component you put on. (And old hoses tend to dry out, and the rubber cracks and break off internally.. which keeps producing more seal-killing crud until the hoses are replaced.)

(This, BTW, is PS 101... Nothing hardcore here.)

Thanks for the 101 tip I am aware of that. All of the lines and hoses etc were changed with the new engine, and I had new hydro lines made up as well since the last box issue and this has been a problem since then.
