: Pics of tubed out frames...
Schmozilla 08-14-2006, 07:07 PM Im tubing the rear portion of my YJ frame and Im looking for ideas... Im thinking im going to run 1.75x.120 dom dubble stacked in the same manor that the BTF kit runs thier frame narrowing kit.
Id like to see some pics of your rear frame... I know, I know search, I DID and did'nt find too much.
thanks.
SHNIPE 08-14-2006, 09:58 PM BTF has quite a few YJ's tubed out after chopping the frame in their porjects section. Didnt know if youd actually seen the pics of em rather than just the products... No descriptions of course.

Erik D_lux 08-14-2006, 10:34 PM Maybe this will help? Its an FJ40 but same basic idea of using tube/frame.

I know about that, but with a 500 dollar price tag, the fact that I have a bender, tube, and plenty or time and equipment. I think I will make my own.
JDunn 08-15-2006, 02:29 PM My frame was rusted so I had to cut it off at a curtain point. Because of my propane tanks I need about 8" more of frame. I double stacked two 8" pieces of 1 3/4 .120 wall on each side. It works good and looks good with all of the sheet metal.

Is the rear section of your frame (the last foot or so, with the doubled tubes) supporting anything else but your tanks and the rear legs of your cage?
Iv'e been considering this for a while, My plan is to do something like RCKRTATZ did in this thread LINK (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464804).
I think that tieing the cage and the tubework of the frame in together would be just as strong if not stronger then doubleing up on the tubework that makes up the "frame". The main problem is that I, like you, want to retain as much of my body as I can, though I do plan on dovetailing it at the same time.
Schmozilla 08-15-2006, 03:12 PM I plan on tieing the "frame" part into the rear of my cage as well as the stock hoop. I am gogin to run 17inch Bilsteins with about 7 inch of up travle, so they are going to stick WAY up in the rear. The front Im thinking is going to have to come up through the hood which I think I can make look super sick.
Schmo, I know exactly what you're talking about. A guy around here was makinga full chassis out of double stacked 1.75 DOM. I can't seem to find a link or picture though. Same idea as you, just a full chassis instead of back half.
JDunn 08-15-2006, 05:16 PM Is the rear section of your frame (the last foot or so, with the doubled tubes) supporting anything else but your tanks and the rear legs of your cage?
The only thing the rear section does is holds my tailgate and tie in to the bottom of my bed for support on the cage. I had it on it's side at the top of winch hill 3 at Fordyce this weekend, drug the cage for about 7' and popped it back on all fours. The cage is scratched but it did not budge.
In this picture you can see how it was before I added the extra tube.
Schmozilla 08-15-2006, 09:18 PM What do yall think about this?
I didnt have too much time ti draw it all, I will add triangulation in the middle and gussets near the frame end between both tubes. the upper tube in the back will dubble to hold my anti-rock.

Looks pretty good, but what does the tube coming forward (towards the driver and passenger seat) tie into, the down tube for the cage? Also, why not put a little space in between the tubes and put cripple joints in? Besides looking pretty cool in my opinion, it would add some strength.

The tubes comming forward go to the main hoop on the cage... Its not just for added strength, its narrowed so I can clear coil overs.
DownNDirty 08-16-2006, 11:30 AM So your going to run the antirock behind the rear axle? It seems like you would want to keep that infront of the rear axle so that if you get hit hard by someone or back into something that is protected. I would probably try to modify what polyperformance is doing so that you can tie in the coilovers and C pillers. I dont see a lot of benifit of running dual tubes in the back.
Schmozilla 08-16-2006, 12:01 PM Dual tubes for strength(The bump stops will be connected to them,If you saw me drive you would understand), thats just the sub frame, it will all be tied into the B and C pillars, the shock hoops will have to stick up through the fender well and will also be connected to the cage.
A sway bar gets more effective the farther tward the rear you get it...Its a trail only rig, so im not too worried about other people hitting me, and If I back into something hard enough to dammage it... fuck it, Ill just run without it.

Keith,
That turned out real nice, good job. Did you make it to Fordyce last weekend?
RCKRATZ 08-16-2006, 04:02 PM yeah, we ran WH#3 at Sierra Trek. Was out there for the whole week beating on the thing and its holding up good.
socalchef 08-16-2006, 04:18 PM Was it Lame's? IndyCJ? ended up being dark blue and silver? That was badass... Another CJ7 backhalf I think was the thread title...Look for that

Sorry, that's what we refer to them as. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. It is the little piece of tube in between the double tubes right behind where the door would be.
