Im Am Building A 95.5 Tacoma With Full Width Axles. High Pinion 60 Front And A Sterling 10.25 Rear. Ive Had This Truck Built For A While. Im Just Finaly Going Big. Orginaly I Built It With A High Pinion Dana 30. Dont Laugh It Came Highly Built And Was Cheap. I Ran A Stock Rear Changed Gears And Welded The Diff. The Combo Worked Well For About A Minute. Id Brake R&p Almost Everytime Out. If It Wasnt The Gears It Would Be An Axle Or Lockers. So I Finaly Got Tired Of Small Tires And Constenly Working On The Damn Thing. Scored A 87 Ford F350 For A $1000.00 And Started Building. Im Keeping It Simple For Know With A Leaf Spring Front And Rear. Truck Allready Has Daul Cases So Should Crawl Good.
List Of Parts I Installed:
60 Front-5.38 Yukon R&p,detroit Locker, yukon Inner And Outters (35 Spline Cromos) Rock And Roll Drive Flanges (the Sexy Red Ones) PARTS MIKE HIGH STEER ARMS, longfield u-joints
10.25 Rear-5.38 Yukon, miller Locked Diff, Glo's Diff Cover And Disk Brake Conversion. I Shaved A Ton Off The Bottom Of The Rear.
TIRES AND WHEELS-39.5 TSL 16.5 WAGON WHEELS WITH KORE DIY CUSTOM BEADLOCKS.
Lots Of Pics Coming Soon.

Here's a pic of what used to be in it. Dana 30 front with Warn axles, Super Joints from Randy's R&P, ARB locker, and 4.56's. Once the ARB gave up it was changed to a Detroit that gave up also. Stock Taco rear with a 6 pack locker and 4.56's. Oh, and the Detroit was warrantied, so if anyone wants this stuff shoot me a PM. Also had 36" Iroks. Those are also for sale.

Replace the old bent up leafs with newer ones. They are Chevy 3/4 tons. Also got the rear end in and ready for brakes and a driveline. We still have the mock shackles on it and those will have to be made also.

With the leaf springs in place we bolted up the axle. Really we did, at least on the drivers side. The Ford came with the lower bracket for the leaf springs, so I got some 9/16" bolts from CAT and here it is.
TacomaJoe95
08-15-2006, 04:13 PM
Here's a shot of the pass. side. Just standard u-bolts on this side. The u-bolt plates where made to order by MP Trailers (Trailer Guy). Just give him the measurements and they'll bust out the plates needed. They have the option of having the corners 45'ed but it isn't something that has to be done so I didn't have it done.

First thing was to get rid of the old spring perches. With an open bay, MP Trailers, and an air arch, they came right off. A little grinding for clean up and the tubes where smooth.

Here's a grinding shot. It is a really bright photo due to the fact of someone playing with the camera.

I've got to give a buddy some props here. Joe is doing a heck of a job on this rig. This is one of those projects that isn't really hard to do, but it isn't really easy either. I mean look at the thing. There isn't a straight piece of anything about this rig. It is the hardest thing to square a set of axles under a rig, but yet, they look so out of square when you compare the tires to the rest of the rig. Plus, you have to remove everything from the last set of axles, and of course you find things to repair as you go.
Been wheeling with Joe for a long time now and I've been honored to be able to help him out and in return have him help me. He is a great guy and it is great to see him being able to step up to the larger axles and tires. This guy has hung with us for years with the tooth picks and 36's, and I can't wait to see him with logs and 39.5's. Nice job.
Oh, and on a side note. Can you believe that this guy bought this rig used and is still making payments on it?

Trailer Guy
08-29-2006, 05:02 PM
Here's another shot of the front. Here you can see the gussets going from the lower cross member to the upper. If Joe wants a winch on this rig, we'll build the front bumper and winch mount off of these cross members. Of course, he may save that for the buggy he gets to build this winter. You'll also see the 39.5's are now mounted up.

Got the ram mounts built and the hydro. steering installed and finished. Here is a shot of the mount at the axle. We were able to keep the ram up high in-line with the tie rod and behind it, out of harms way.
Trailer Guy
08-31-2006, 11:55 AM
And, of course, a shot of the tie rod with the ram mount welded to it. We used a 6" stroke ram, and are very happy with the turning radius that we have. The mounts are made out of 1" thick material, and shouldn't have a problem. The orbital was mounted on the top of the frame right above the location of the steering box. With the box out of the way, it left us lots of room to play with.

Looks great, for a beater that is. Wish i had the full widths, im stuck with waggy 44s, 2.5" bs and a shitty turning radius. Just a month away from a tear down and rebuild to fix my front suspension and steering probs. You running a panhard bar?

Well I got the truck finished in time to make it to the Con labor day weekend.
The thing performed great. Only had one break, which was a leaf spring center pin. A nice quick fix. I had some steering issues, I need to work out some bugs with full hydro. But I made it through. Tacoed a front leaf in the box. Thats nothing some bailing wire and duct tape didnt fix. So I decided its time to link the front and rear. That will be another build up. Ill post some pics soon.

What kind of seat(s) (buckets or a bench?)are back there I can't really tell from the pics. I'm just looking to do almost exactly what you did to the back of my reg cab taco.

Do the seats face backwards?

Yes, it started out as a standard cab. I cut out the back of the cab and unbolted the front of the bed. I also cut out the floor of the bed to lower seat hight and mount them to the frame. They are buckets and came out of a Ford E350 bus. They are a perfact jump seat for something like this. They come mounted to a nice frame and with seat belts. I upgraded to 5 point harness. They face backwards to allow space for my speaker box. There is plenty of leg room to face them forward.

Well normally just my kids ride back there. But a 6' person would be able to clear his head. I gained approx 3or 4 inches by droping the seat to the frame.
With a 2" body lift the seat drops alot. Right to the top of the gas tank. Then just build some brackets to support the seat frame.

Here is a quick shot of the front with the winch. We added more to this, but not much. There really wasn't a big reason to try and protect the body so just a few more where added. The both the front and the rear turned out nice, but I guess we'll never know because he's probably still sleeping. If I didn't have three little kids running around the house at 7am I would still be asleep myself. Anyhow, here you go.....

With the leaf springs in place we bolted up the axle. Really we did, at least on the drivers side. The Ford came with the lower bracket for the leaf springs, so I got some 9/16" bolts from CAT and here it is.
I am in the process of building a similar setup. I have a HP D60 from a 78 F250, and a FF14 bolt going on a 2000 tacoma. It is supercharged with a crawler on 38's. The driver side spring pearch on the D60 needs that funky bottom pad, where might I find one of those. Or, is this something that I could fab myself. I have a shitload of plate steel. I was thinking about putting one of those u bolt eliminator kits on there, but I just can't see it holding up to the twisting of the axle. Your rig looks good BTW.

I'm not sure what the 78-79 d60 uses. You should be able to just use u bolts on that side. Other wise search the junk yards for that piece.
AzRat
04-05-2007, 01:53 PM
Unfortunately you can't just use regular ubolts since the housing has a fin that runs all the way to the edge where the axle tube meets it and would not allow a ubolt to seat properly on the housing. I guess you caould make it work if you hit it with a grinder and took a ton of material off??? I will keep an eye out for something. Thanks anyway.
TacomaJoe95
04-05-2007, 02:06 PM
Yeah I forgot the huge rib under the pad. You would need to grind a notch for the u bolt to fit into. Just search the junk yards you will find one. There is a ton of those out there. I had the whole truck to dismantle so that how I got mine.

So hurry up and do a 4 link and lets go do some wheelin. Aaron can get a pretty good price on heims. I just recently bought my through him. I bought the 1"1/4x1" for the lowers and the 7/8x3/4 for the uppers. Got all the tube inserts, jam nuts, and misalignment spacers. All I need now are some 2.5x16 Fox air shocks.

Time for the torture and the end of an era in Redding. Joe used to be just Joe. He was just another one of the many. He got a rolled Taco and ran it like it was stolen (if I didn't know him better, I would have thought that it was). With the stock rear axle (welded third), stock ifs, and 33" Boggers, Joe would hit the trail in any gear that got the rig over the obstacle. After a number of trails under his belt and full throttle action when needed, Joe was awarded a plaque with his nick name that has stuck to this day. "TacomaJoe" The rig might be gone, but the legend will live on, I'm sure.
These are some of the last pictures taken before his truck left. These where taken at my shop while we pulled the axles out. Joe didn't do much, he was to busy crying. He kept hugging the truck saying things like "There will never be another one like you baby" and other real sad things. He's a real emotional guy when you get to know him. Here's one for the rig Joe.
Trailer Guy
07-16-2007, 07:28 PM
And a few more. The last one is the last picture ever taken of Joe and what used to be his rig.
It was a hell of a run Joe, and I enjoyed every step of the building process over the years. And now, I can't wait to spend the long days and even longer nights helping to create your buggy, and enjoying the outcome.

Yeah there really isnt that much left.(plumb steering, brake lines, drive shafts) it was fusterating while it was on jack stands, but i saw the light again after it was on for wheels. I cant take the credit though. Phil at silly fab put the front in and built the ram mount. I dropped the whole thing three inches(lift blocks) which moved the front end foward about 3 inches. Over all I am happy with how it came out.

Its your rig do what you want to do but it will be easier in the long run to just move the spring perches and make custom shock mounts on the axle than to redo the frame mounts. You can take all your measurements and do all the work with the axle on jack stands away ffrom the truck with room to work.Just my opinion though.
