I am not buying one but a friend is, he is lookinag at an 86, with 88k on it. The dealer wants 900. Is that a good price? What stuff should he look for? How much work/money/time will it take to make it into a dependable trail rig? Thanks for the help guys:beer:  :usa:

i am not going to flame you but get ready for those who are. it sounds like a good price if it runs good. but i suggest off-road.com suzuki bbs much better board for a lightly modified zook on a learning curve

Depends on the condition of course, but there are virtually none to be had around here for that price, so if it runs OK and isn't rusted out, it sounds like a good price.
Mods, well that just depends on what he wants and how much work he can do himself and how well he scrounges, but I'd say about roughly $1300 for homebrew SPOA, used tires & wheels, rear locker, 4:1 Tcase gears doing your own all your own work.
Same setup buying kits new tires and wheels, an SPOA kit and having the work done at a shop say about $2200.
PS: Get your nomex ready.

900 at a dealer? Seriously what kind of POS dealer would sell an 88 sami? for 900$ ?? Taboot- what kind of dealer would have a sami on his lot? Not the kind of dealer I'd buy a car from. Probably wants you to pay weekly.
