: CJ Brake Upgrade

I have an 85 CJ 7 with manual brakes. I would like to upgrade to power. I have discs up front and drums out back. Would upgrading to an 86 master and booster be a good choice, or should i just go with the YJ swap, or the Corvette swap.

Wondering the same thing about my 78 CJ5. What's the best options and sources?

As far as pure simplicity, a YJ booster/master/and valve is dirt simple. (and somewhat cheap)

It is a DEFINATE improvement over stock cj manual brakes, but probably not as a good as say the E350 upgrade. Big bonus, its a direct fit too.

I am only running 35's (wee little tires) but they stop fine. It will lock them up on pavement no problem.

What years would fit-so I can order one-I can get parts at 10% over cost if I know what to get. Thanks

so an E350 MC, Booster, and valve would probably be my best option?

Used you can pick them up for 50 bucks all day lohg on Ebay.

Its been covered a few times (even here on pirate) but I don't recall off hand what years yj work. (I want to say 91 up, but don't quote me)

FWIW I used a 94 yj setup on my 77 cj.

I know a 1989 Wrangler single diaphragm booster bolts right on to a CJ also.

I have done the swap using another CJ power brake booster, It bolts right up to the existing pedals, Can't use the ones in a J truck they have different linkage. Mine came from a wreck CJ but works great. Took about 3hrs to swap. I am running 35's with plenty of stopping power. Hope this helps JC

Don't know what size tires you have or what you use your jeep for but I put a 2001 chevy truck hydroboost with a corvette master cylinder on mine. It was the best upgrade I have ever done on my jeep. I run 36' swampers and it will stop great on and off the road. If you just have a street jeep then the yj conversion will work just fine for you. Oh by the way the hydro is not a direct swap you will need to fab a mounting bracket to fit your cj and the pedal rod is too long. I left the rod the stock length and made a bracket to extend the booster out from the firewall. Its a pretty easy install

95 YJ's with the 4.0 came with dual diaphragm boosters. You will need the master cylinder for a 95. It has a plastic reservoir (AutoZone $85 new). You will also need to run new lines from the mc to the proportioning valve. The mc is metric thread and the lines need to be bubble flared. It is a big improvement over the CJ power brake booster set up.

Thanks guys- I'm running 32" tires-nothing fancy here. Just a street/trail/sand runner fun Jeep. The YJ conversion should be a nice upgrade.

There was a writeup on Pirate about a year ago or so where the guy wrote a step by step and listed all the part numbers. I believe it was mostly S10 parts.

I have a 67 CJ-5 runnin' 33x13.50's, D44 front and rear, disk front drum rear, and I want Power Brakes too. I've seen the $400 power brake upgrade from Collins Brothers Jeep, but would something else work better and be cheaper, like the YJ parts with the E350 MC, and if so, does this all just bolt up to my stuff, or is there a lot of fab involved? My pedals run through the floor, not swinging pedals, if that matters. Help a brother out.

I put a Dana 44 in my 1976 CJ5 that had disc brakes along with it. After installing the axle I got a rebuilt vacuum booster and master cylinder from NAPA for a CJ7.
There was a problem. Behind the booster, bolted to the firewall is what I would call the base, which is a lever setup, permitting the booster to be mounted low enough for the hood to close. I have never been able to find one of these so what I finally did was just drive it the way it was. Guess what? It works fine without the booster but if I ever find one I'll certainly install it.

i'm running 35's and f/r 44's...discs in the front...i am leaning toward the YJ swap, because its cheaper than vanco...

I put a dual diaphram booster from "81 iirc Cadillac on mine had to lenghten the push rod a bit they weren't to touchy at all and with factory '81 CJ-7 driveline I could lock up 35's on pavement

i received a cj mc/booster as a gift. I am hoping this will work fine. Is there a mounting bracket to mount it to the firewall, or does it just mount to the firewall...if a bracket is needed, will a yj one work?

thanks

There is a mounting bracket. This piece is supposed to be "RARE". I've sold a few on Ebay with the booster anywhere from $125ish to $250. I was very surprised when the one sold for $250.

As far as I understand the CJ has the different levers while the YJ is straight through.

from pics that i have seen, its looks like there is part of the linkage attached to the bracket...and the yj one is straight through...i have a yj one and am trying to see if it will work...

thx

YJ bracket won't work on a CJ booster.
