: 8 Error codes! 96 Disco
sinistertrucker 08-18-2006, 02:59 PM 96 Dog of a Discovery 4.0/Auto
I need some serious help/input on where to start on this problem.
Service engine light revealed these codes and my generic code book gave me these diagnosis'
PO132 -02 sensor high voltage (bank1 sensor 1)
PO300- randon/multiple cylinder misfire detected
PO303-cylinder 3 misfire detected
PO306-cylinder 6 misfire detected
P1187-variant selection
P1193-egr drive overcurrent
P1313-misfire rate catalyst damage fault-bank 1
P1316-injector circuit/idm codes detected
PTSchram 08-18-2006, 03:24 PM You might have a bad injector in cylinders 3 and six.
You might also have bad plugs/wires for 3 & 6.
You might have a bad oxygen sensor on bank one.
I can guarandamntee you that you do not have an EGR problem.
you most likely need a head job. You should take it to someone with a real Rover diagnostic computer and find out what's really going on.
PT
RichardS 08-18-2006, 06:21 PM The P0xxx codes are generic OBDII and the descriptions you have match what I have.
The P1xxx codes are manufacturer specific and here arethe descriptions from a list of Land Rover codes I found somewhere on the net:
P1187 Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit Short Upstream
P1193 Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit Open Downstream
P1313 Misfire Catalyst Damage Fault Bank A
P1316 Misfire Excessive Emissions Fault
Hard to say if injector or wire related misfires are letting raw fuel through and toasting the sensors or if the sensors are toasted and causing the mixture to be way off and causing a missfire. Either way it is likely bad news for the cat on that side. But listen to PT, he knows way more than I do about how to diagnose, I just wanted to post the correct code descriptions.
sinistertrucker 08-18-2006, 06:51 PM Thanks for the input, my nearest Rover' dealer is 150+ miles away and I don't wanna trust the locals.
-"Never worked on a land rover before, bring it in and we can check it out"
Which/what/where is bank 1?
PTSchram 08-19-2006, 08:08 AM Bank 1, bank A left side
Your cat is fine, it's just telling you that you might be dumping lots of unburned fuel into that could cause problems.
Pull the plugs out and have a look. While you're at it, take a good clsoe look at the plug wires, etc. Visual observation can yield many clues.
Hate to say it, but it looks to me like you have some sticking exhaust valves.
sinistertrucker 08-26-2006, 09:09 PM I went through and changed the plugs, wires and cleared the codes. The check engine light is still on but without codes:confused:

sinistertrucker 10-27-2006, 05:03 PM 130XXX on OG milage and my fuel pump died.
New Codes:
PO300
PO301
PO306
PO303
P1187
P1193
P1313
P1314
P1316
I changed the fuel pump and now it will not start.

PTSchram 10-28-2006, 09:46 AM 130XXX on OG milage and my fuel pump died.
New Codes:
PO300 Random multiple cylinder misfire. Not causing no start
PO301 Cylinder one misfire
PO306 Cylinder six misfire
PO303 Cylinder three misfire
P1187 Oxygen sensor short circuit
P1193 Oxygen sensor short circuit
P1313 Misfire
P1314 Misfire
P1316 Misfire
I changed the fuel pump and now it will not start.
The short circuited oxygen sensors may be the cause for your pump not running. While I'm not as intimately familiar with the wiring harness on the GEMS engines as the Lucas, the oxygen sensor heater circuit may be on the same circuit as the fuel pump-they are the same circuit on Lucas trucks.
We can go further a coupla different ways here (if Afirover were to chime in, he and I could have quite the argument over how to progress from here-LOL). You can refer to the circuit diagram to see if I'm on the right track, or full of shit. We could go to the fuel pump connector and look for presence/absence of power. We could go to the ECU to see if the circuit is shorted, and if the short opens when we disconnect the oxygen sensor (there's a hint right there if I ever saw one).
If you have fuel pressure at the rail, it's time to check compression. Due to all of the misfire codes, you might have some badly stuck valves that aren't closing-no wonder you're not running (that's another hint right there!).
Looks like you have your work cut out for you. Let's hope it' s something stupid simple and you're back here fantasizing about modifications.
(can you tell I was on the phone with Pendy yesterday :flipoff2:)
sinistertrucker 10-28-2006, 12:41 PM There is no pressure at the fuel rails and I don't hear the pump turning on. I am still waiting on my damned ebay manual that I bought some time ago and don't have a clue on the wiring stuff yet.
(on my old 5.0 ford, I bypasses all my smog crap with diodes to trick the system, could rovers be tricked into the same??)
PTSchram 10-29-2006, 05:58 AM Where's the shaking head emoticon?
Run some power to the pump, bypassing everything else, pressurize the rail and see if it starts.
Take two aspirin and call me this afternoon if it doesn't feel better.
sinistertrucker 10-29-2006, 03:31 PM sure thing...
sinistertrucker 11-04-2006, 02:10 PM Well thanks to PT for helping me locate a online manual, I finally figured out what was wrong with the damned thing.

There are no more codes being brought up but it is still very sluggish and slow...

Sounds like it's back to factory normal then... :flipoff2:
motomatt68 11-04-2006, 08:42 PM When I got my '89 RRC the previous owner had rigged up a switch for the fuel pump because he was having "problems" with the original wiring. With my kids in the car his wiring failed and started a fire under the dash.:mad3:
Lots of smoke and a pissed wife but my 6 year old thought it was great. It also motivated me to start my project.
sinistertrucker 11-04-2006, 08:49 PM Yeah the hack job on most if not all the wiring is crazy!! I wish my wife wasn't so attached to the thing, I would gladly sell my toy to finance a little family wheeler project.

O\you say that only because you are afraid of GEMS PT.. :flipoff2:
Bosch is even more "interesting"
And TD5? Well here's a stock market tip... New Belgium Brewing..
