: narrow width dana60
gavstonka 08-18-2006, 07:55 PM
looking to pick your brains,
wanting a dana 60 front & rear complete diffs.
are they available in aprox 58-60" wheel track, land rovers are narrower than most vehicles.
can anyone help me,
wanting to use them in a Toyota LandCruiser with CUMMINS 6BT diesel, out of dodge ram (big grunt):(
Old Scout 08-18-2006, 08:39 PM No such axle under under any truck I've seen. I had to build my 61" rear D60 for my scout.

444turbodiesel 08-18-2006, 09:00 PM I'm on the fence whether to use my full width (FA-68"/RA-66") axles under my EB with big backspacing or narrow them.

LandRover Defenders Salisbury/d60 have a 58.5'' wheeltrack which could be legally widened in OZ to 60.5'' with offset rims.Front Salisbury is rare though.
LandRover 101 has 60.5'' wheeltrack Salisbury front and rear, but once again, very rare, particularly in OZ, although the OZ army had about 45 trucks plus spares.

madcowdungbeetle 08-18-2006, 11:08 PM Narrowest stock D60 I've seen was 64" WMS-WMS in an old GMC van.

Correct track width measurement is centre of tyre to centre of tyre. WMS to WMS is not really an accurate guide to what the engineeringly correct track width is. Gavstonka is from Australia where track width measurement is centre of tyre to centre of tyre.

You guys are probably looking at it from a regulatory perspective where the vehicles are limited by local regulations based upon the manufacturer's orignal specs. (I thought your gun laws were bad until I saw the new Queensland vehicle regs concerning lifts and tire sizes)
As we in the US are unhindered by such regs, for us, it is far more common to use the physical size of the axles to determine usefulness for an application.
If I'm right that this is regualtorily driven, are you permitted to change offsets on the rims to achieve desired trackwidth?

Yes Paul. we are permitted to alter the positive offset of the rim by up to 1 inch on beam axles and only 1/2'' on independant suspension systems. That is for now,but there is a thread on a couple of the local forums about some government official trying to justify his overpaid useless existence by overturning all previous rules and formulating even more restrictive ones.
There are trucks that I and other mechanics have built for customers that at great expense have been engineered and certified for larger wheels ,wider track axles, altered suspensions etc, that may be deregistered without explaination or compensation paid to the owners. Time to give up the hobby/occupation or move I feel.
You have become quite adept at finding employment lately, Know of any good jobs about over there ?

I may be hiring. I don't pay well but we have a good time when company is here.

If by ''company'' you are referring to the ladies from the talent bar, then it's surprising that you would get any work done at all !
Many happy returns for your 40th BTW.

Should I send a plane ticket?
PTSchram 08-20-2006, 12:11 AM Should I send a plane ticket?
Hey now, if you need help, you know who to call!
(man, would that set the wife off or what?)

Worse yet, no tires on road over 33" from what I've read of the new Queensland regs. Stories abound of vehicles having reg numbers recorded and letters sent out demanding the vehicles be re-engineered or decertified/de-registered.

Not good jobs, but the wife's employer (and one of mine) may be hiring for what is arguably the most boring job on earth, proof-reading parts catalogs.
If I had good jobs, I wouldn't have to work two or three:flipoff2:
Agrover 08-20-2006, 02:43 AM Should I send a plane ticket?
I was tempted.
I started packing my bags, but then the wife came in to ask me if I could take our daughters to basketball practice, which reminded me that I am not a single man anymore. Oh well, my weekly Viagra bill probably would have exceeded the salary you could pay me anyway.

evilfij 08-21-2006, 08:10 AM Someone correct me but I think dually eaton rears are quite narrow. Also 14 bolt cab and chassis rears are narrow too.
Front you are out of luck. You will have to shorten the long side. Of course the toy conversion could be an option as well.
