in gearsets, if you f*ck up the backlash, what are the potential cosequences? Like if you install your lockright, and now the backlash is all f*ckered up?

Clunking, clanging, whining, KABOOM! What did you install it in. Adjust the backlash back into specs or you will have problems. In drop-out third members, it's really easy to do. Then after all of that some clicking and banging are part of having a locker!

In a Zuk? Did you decide front or rear or both?

Backlash is there to allow the metal to expand when it gets hot. Tool little, and the gears lock up. Too much and they beat themselves to death. On race cars, shoot for the high side. On rock crawlers shoot for the low side....

On a used set, ALWAYS set them back to where it was before! Once the gears have worn in, they need to be returned to their same postion so they don't whine.... Check it before you take it apart, set it back there when you get done.... :rasta:

More importantly get the pattern the same. If you are out of spec to begin with you can tighen the backlash back into spec on used gears when you set them up again.

but with a Lockright, do I really have to be worried about this at all?

Yes, you need to worry about it.

But with a lockright, you won't be able to spot it by excessive clunking when you drive it. Because lockrights clunk when the diff is set up properly.

Pull the third member, and wiggle the ring gear back and forth. Feel that little bit of play in there? That's the backlash, and that's what you need to re-create when you reassemble the differential.
