Does anyone have the pics and stats of the grey fj55 with the unimog axles that was featured in the off road adventures magazine? I want to build one like it and I remember it had an eaton shifter that would also actuate the lockers. I've searched like crazy but I can't find anything. BTW: I want to sell/trade my rockcrawler so I can get an FJ55. I posted it here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=500493

No wonder I couldn't find it. That's an awesome 45! I want to build a similar fj55. Any idea how he interfaced the shifter with the lockers? I want to put a 1uzfe with the lexus auto, a doubler setup behind it, then unimog portals. I might go with toy axles with custom portal boxes because I really don't want to run 53inch tires to get decent highway gearing. We get a lot of custom gears made for the machines at work so I think I could get a pretty good deal on some gears. I think the 55 will work better for me because it's bigger. Most of the cheaper ones I've seen have rusted out tailgates but I want to make a custom liftgate/tailgate so I can load my bike. I'd hate to cut up a nice one. I'll be posting every inch of the build here. I'll get started as soon as my truck sells. Thanks for the pic link!

Here is a gallery with Brian Steen's 55 on Volvo C303 portals... It is green though, not sure if this is what you are looking for. The volvos came with cable lockers, he bought some actuators from Ox locker for them, FWIW.. Top speed was about 50, with the V8..

As of SEMA the dude with the 45 had not hooked up the cable lockers yet...
But he advertised the heck out of them...

Is that grey 45 as sick as it looks or is it all neato but no go ?

The last time I saw it, Neato..
Apparently the owner ran the 4Wparts in Reno..
Or something..

That 45 is very similar to my build up of a 4Runner.
He is running H1 wheels but I do not see CTIS lines to the portals on the back so probably no CTIS. Also, with all of that bling (way slicker than mine) you would think he would at least have disc brakes! He also is running the same tires I am and airbags too.
Damn. Thought I was being original! Guess not.
That one shot is not a flex shot-- he is just fawking with the airbags.
As for the lockers, they are easily converted to air actuation with a dual acting ram.
I will put up a pic of my conversion if you are interested.
As for highway gearing-- I am at 3000 rpm at 60 mph on 40 in tires. For my V6 that is perfect otherwise I might as well forget about using 5th gear.
The diesel is the real problem-- they do not mix well with Mogs because of the gearing and most diesels don't like to rev much above 1500 rpm sustained. There are a lot of people that run v8's and mogs and cruise all day above 70 mph so in the real world it is just not an issue.
Toyota/Mog axles? No thanks. They will be expensive and inherently weak. The Mog tubes are double wall. It would be very difficult to build an axle tube that could handle the stress. Toyota tubes might as well be tin foil.

I was thinking more along the lines of toyota center sections and custom tubes/portal boxes maybe even full independent suspension. The stress will be concentrated on the portals and toyota parts are redily available so it doesn't make sense to use a huge center section. I'm an industrial maintenance mechanic and the machines I work on are one offs so we frequently have to build parts for them when things fail. When I replace a part that breaks, it won't break again. Eventually, I'll work myself out of a job. The shop is fully equipped to make anything out of metal. The only thing we don't make in house are the gears and they are cut by someone locally. I need to find out if he can work with better stock than we use for the machines though. I might be trading the rockcrawler for an HJ60 Landcruiser if we can figure out transportation issues. I want to build the portal boxes/knuckles out of 1 inch plate have them heat treated and machine them to final specs. I followed the buildup of your runner very closely and admire the out of the box thinking. I told my wheeling buddies about my ideas for an air adjustable independent suspension and got laughed at. I just found out that one of them helped Rick Deremo build independent suspension parts for his new XRRA buggy. It will be very interesting to see how it turns out. I don't want to build the ultimate end all rock crawler. I want to build a truck that will flat out clear most obstacles, haul motorcycles, dogs, and camping gear, be comfortable to drive, and still walk all over anything a built jeep could handle. I know a low slung, solid axled, low c.o.g. buggy will always be better but it's not a truck and has no practical use. My wife doesn't like to go offroad in my rock crawler because her boobs bounce all over the place and get sore so I'd like to build something that clears the rocks/ruts instead of bouncing over them. Whatever I end up doing, it will be over the winter and I'll post it all on pirate so you guys can laugh at me.
