: TSL or SX
borton 04-25-2002, 09:40 AM here is my dillema, I want a tire slightly bigger than the 35x12.5 16 ssr's I'm now running, also after my trip to phoenix, I want someting that has sidewalls that can take sharp rocks, so I'm thinking the 36x12.5 15 SX, so a friend at 4 wheel parts asks why not a 36x12.5 15 TSL for $140 less on a set of 4. Hummm, the tsl runs big for the advertised size at a 36.3, and I could get a 13/26-16LT that runs the same size as the SX, and I won't have to get new wheels.
so my main concern is sidewall strength and traction, how do these do in JV?
Rubicrawler 04-25-2002, 10:12 AM Both tire's are very strong and either would be a good choice. My personel preference is the SX. I have had a set of 36x12.5x15 SX's on my EB (much heavier than your XJ) for 3 years now and I've yet to damage the sidewall (lord know's I've tried).
bigdude 04-25-2002, 10:21 AM They'll both take a beating.
I had 36x12.5-15 SX's and loved them. You just have to air them way down, like 6 lbs.
TSL's flatten out a little better with more air, comparable at like 10 lbs. If you're running beadlocks it won't matter, but with that low air the SX's got pretty short.
I'd get the TSLs (I just did in 38" flavor) and see if you like them. If not there is always a good used market for swampers. Plus like you said you can get the size you want without getting new wheels. That sounds perfect.
I've had MT/Rs, SXs and now TSLs. After the TSLs I'll figure between the 3 which I liked best and buy 'em until something new comes out.
FULLSIZE 04-25-2002, 10:26 AM for strength, go sx.
Toytank 04-25-2002, 01:10 PM If you want tough sidewalls go for the SX's
 :D :usa: :D
borton 04-25-2002, 01:26 PM is there any diffrence in the sidewall besides the tread that comes down the sidewall on the sx?
ie: sidewall ply / thickness
MOFUGRA 04-25-2002, 02:37 PM i just bout 38.5 sx, what a sweet tire, they are beefy as hell, but dont expect to be drivin much on the street anymore. And if i had to do it again i would still get the sx.
GloNDark 04-25-2002, 02:45 PM The TSL is a great tire. I have beat the holy sh!t outta my 15x35's on my cruiser and I love em. The SX is a great tire too...but need to be air down much farther that a regular TSL.
Get the TSL's, and if you don't like em. Sell em to me!! :D:D:D
RHINO 04-25-2002, 04:57 PM hey brent just some info to help you out, i have 36-12.50-15 sx's on 8" rims.
they measure 35.5 inflated with the pig on them, the side wall reads tread: 4 plies nylon cord + 2 plies steel, sidewall: 4 plies nylon cord
i believe the tsl has 6 ply nylon cord all the way round.
i dont have beadlocks so i dont air way down, but i typically run in the 12-15 PSI range and am happy with flex and ride at that pressure.
LazyDaveD 04-25-2002, 05:41 PM What about a Q78? TSL pattern without the width and much less weight. I think it would work well on an XJ.
wheelinjp 04-25-2002, 05:46 PM Hey Brent I love what you did with that XJ, sweet. Anyway I have ran the 36-12.5-15 tsls for over two years and I cant say enough good things. The only problem I have had is the bead popping off without beadlocks at 5-8psi. They flex great at 10-12psi. The 36 13 16 is a little narrower but a great tire Im sure. My tsls sidewall says 4ply nylon and I have put the sidewalls through some sh-t.I think you would be happy with the tsls

That is a good suggestion if he wants to stay with a narrow 35. The Q78-16 is 35.5 tall and only 10.8in the center whereas the 36-13 is 12.7 in the middle and only 35.9in tall.I have seen the Q78 and they look like a chubby tall 34-9.5
twistedmetal 04-25-2002, 05:57 PM Ever consider running the Parnelli Jone's tire? My little Bro had 'em on his wrangler and they rocked! Tough as hell sidewalls, super sticky, and they lasted forever. All that, and they only required one weight on one wheel to balance them. His were the 36x14.50 versions. I see they now have a 37x12.50 as well.

I've got a friend that is running them on his ramcharger, and because of that fact, I dont' want to run them, he allready thinks we are like blood brothers cause I painted mine white, same color as him.
biggreenjeep 04-26-2002, 08:27 AM I also run the 36x14.50 PJ's and I can attest they grip like hell and are super tough. I only needed a small weight at first, but a spooled rear quickly took care of the nice balance they had....expensive tires though.

Just for reference, I'm kind of familiar with all of these sizes. The 15" version of the Q78 actually comes out to exactly 35" on a 7" rim (that's what I have now). The 16" version is a full 35.5" (buddy has a set).
Have not checked the 16" version of the 36, but the 15" version is typically a true 35.5" diameter, with the SX .5" shorter (probably add .5" for 8" rims vs 10's).
Even on a narrow rim, I've yet to find a tire stamped "36" (or "36.5" for that matter) that won't go through a 36" caliper w/o touching at all.
For a full 36+" diameter, you need to check the 38X12.50 or R85 Buckshots. My set of 38X12.50's was 36.0" exactly on 10" rims.

YJ4RoX 04-26-2002, 08:49 AM 36x12.5x15 and 33x12.5 TSL's are 8 ply, not sure about the 36x13x16. Regular TSL sidewalls are pretty damn tough. Hard to beat a SX though, i am going with the 36 TSL over the SX because of the extra weight the SX has. PLus here on the east we deal with a lot of mud and a TSL is much better in mud than a SX.:D Good luck
