sorry in advance for the newby ? but I have little to no experience with auto trannies. I have a th350 that I have not personally ran yet but when I dropped the pan to change the filter and detent cable I found some what apears to be gasket like material in the bottom of the pan. What gets me is that the pan gasket and the throttle body gasket appear to be in good shape. Is there another gasket I am missing?

Depends on what it looks like but you have steals and clutches in the tranny. The cluthes will break off pieces that look like gasket material. The 350s have a problem of a small breather hole on top that will sometimes get water in the tranny, enough and it causes the material on the clutches to break off more. To much in there it may be worth while to have it looked at to see about a rebuild. Also make sure the breather line comes up so it doesn't get water in the tranny.

Thanks Armystomper. After more investigating I am pretty sure that one of the clutches flew apart. Is it very difficult to rebuild one of these trannies?

I've done them but its normally easier to find someone that will rebuild it for you. You can sometimes find a person or a shop that you can take it into and they will rebuild it for under $500. I have a guy right down the street for $350 will rebuild the th350, 400, C4 and so on and really stands behind his work. See if you can find someone like that is your best bet.
