i need some opinions about my upcoming swap i got a 76 chevy 3/4 ton d44 14bolt np2o5 with the huge cast iron 3spd+granny with a blown up mild 350 i have a 427 tall deck in a old farm truck i just picked up. should i swap out the small block for the big torq beast or just freshen the 350? if i swap is it a direct fit ? im pretty sure the bell housings are the same. the donor truck is a 80 gmc 7000 flat bed 5spd c50 split shft but the hi/lo motor burned out and its f n rusted 2 hell. will that flywheel work? any suggestions? thanx for the help.

I'd swap it, and the tranny you've got is a 4spd damnit!! granny low counts as a gear LOL
The 427 will fit, but you might need a new flywheel, as the bigger truck might have the huge 13" clutch. Also be aware of the weird dual thermostat and funky water pump on the 427....

The 366/427 truck engines use a funky sort of bellhousing, a 13 inch dual disc clutch set up and its heavier than shit.
I would use a regular 396,402,427 flywheel, they are all internally balanced. And then get a good heavy duty clutch and you should be good to go.
Oh, and good luck getting a radiator hose from your stock radiator to the massive inlet and outlets for the coolant on that 427.

I had one in my 79 3/4 ton and never experienced any problems puttin it in. Pulled everything from the donor truck, but it was an auto too.

on a side note, most of the 427 tall deck engines came with steel bottom ends.... a definate plus. i have one at my dads shop that is going to be used to make an all steel, all gm 427 standard deck. all i need is time and money... damn

The tall block engines are torgue monsters but not horse power monsters. The flywheel and bell housing will fit off of your 350 on it but you will need to find A intake to change it over to a single thermostat so you can run a radiator out of a disel pu will work best to cool it. I pretty sure you can get a intake from summit or jegs they use the tall block engine in dragster's. You can bolt up water pump from a pass big block to get the bottom hose to work on the radiator... It is some work but doable.

yea i priced intakes on ebay but there all single planes for like 400$ but ill check summit and jegs for intake n headers i got a 4 row rad already in the truck ive looked at talldecks at auctions recently that thermo housing cracks me up it looks like a f n wiener. while i have it out i was gona slap a bumpstick in it to chop the idle up sum u think that would hurt? or just stay with the stocker? and clucth suggestions ? good place to get um for cheap? i price em at summit the only one that fits my description is 1700$ and freakin 4 discs for truck pulls.im on a buget. thanx

Just use a regular 4spd and clutch. Swap flywheels.
You can get intake spacers and use regular BBC manifolds.

If you have any friends that drag races you can have them check with some of the racers to see if someone has lying around. They are like rockcrawlers they know who has all the goodies.......

I just run whatever cheap dual plane I can find on all my tall decks with the intake spacers. Just double check your gaskets to make sure they are going to seal on the spacers, because if I remember right you can only get them in rectanglur port. Also, I have been running a MSD dist, with an adjustable collar.

I think overall, you will not be happy with the charcteristics of this engine in a light truck. This is based on my expereience of using a 366. You will be ahead in the long run just sticking with a 350 imo. Good luck.
