: WTF Head bolts?
Old Scout 08-23-2006, 09:37 PM What are these made of pot metal!:mad3:
I have three with striped heads and it looks like I will need to weld on a socket/nut or cut the freaking head off!
I need a beer!

Many of the bolts on later LandRovers have been the source of numerous headaches for me in recent years, and I use single hex sockets and ring spanners almost exclusively nowadays.
Bill.
PTSchram 08-24-2006, 05:13 AM If you don't use a very tightly fitting socket and make absolutely certain it is fully seated, you'll have this every time.
Lemme guess, they are all in the back, up against the bulkhead, right?
Old Scout 08-24-2006, 10:29 AM One is the right side rear and two are the right side front.
Left head is off!
So are the bolts heads 5/8 or 16MM? My Snap on rep is getting me some special socket.
PTSchram 08-24-2006, 12:19 PM 5/8 is pretty darned close to 16 mm, like 0.004" greater.
OK, I screwed that one up pretty well. Let's asusme that 5/8=0.625", 16 m/m (using 0.03937 as our ocnversion factor)-0.62992. Given that all of the threads in the block are Imperial, I assume they are 5/8".
Why you pulling the heads??? Don't tell me you overheated it.
Old Scout 08-24-2006, 12:39 PM Yea I did overheat it 13 months and 15k miles ago. It blew a head gasket, she only has 168k on her! :flipoff2:

Barely broken in.
Since you're that far into it, I hope you budgeted for a new cam. I'll bet a case of Sierra Nevada Pale the cam's badly worn and the truck would benefit from a new one.
Got dial indicator?
AKRover 08-24-2006, 01:58 PM I rounded off one of those bolts when I did the heads on my classic, man was I pissed. Everything was going really smooth until that happened. I ended up making a late night run ti NAPA and buying a set of bolt extractors. I was able to remove the bolt with one of these buy taping the top of the breaker bar with a hammer while turning it. The extractor got some good cracks up the side and now sits atop my tool box still stuck to the bolt as a reminder not to do that again.
evilfij 08-24-2006, 02:13 PM Use chrome 6 point non-impact socket that is NEW and snap-on or similar.
Also, I spray them with brake clean and let them dry before attempting.
pendy 08-24-2006, 10:51 PM Why tortue yourself old man. Just pull the engine. Then you can get the pesky rear main oil leak as well..
Heh heh. Wait till he has to remove the torque convertor bolts. Like butter those bolt heads. LR bolts are like security non tamper fasteners anymore.

In the meantime, I'll translate:D

I can throw stones all I want. The guy who sold us our new windows drove a nail with a pane of glass and the glass is guaranteed against beakage. Even if I get drunk and start shooting at them, they'll come out and replace the glass. Shopgrrl was thinking ahead again!
It's not the agreeing with me that's the problem of one's mental status. It's following my lines that causes touble, right AFI? Tobias? "Hey AFI, I can roll your truck if you'd like"-man, did that statement scare the dealership guys!
