or 28 if it comes from a Ranger (or a mustang  ) :flipoff2:

if it's a 28 spline, the tubes goes smaller a couple of inches from the pumpkin

How about a town car rear end? I have heard its 28 spline. And the tube goes smaller at the brake backing plates.

Towncar is 28.

The Explorer and F-150/Bronco 8.8s are the only ones commonly 31 spline.

There are a few exceptions though, such as Mustang Cobras, and the FX4 (LII) Rangers (hard to find though).

8.8s aren't the only axles to have 28 spline shafts... (the GM 10-bolt comes to mind)

So is a 10-bolt.

The lug pattern on it would probably better tell the story though

5x4.5" would most likely be either a 7.5" or 8.8" shaft.

If its 5x4.75 (appears the same untill you try to put a wheel up to it), then definitely a 10-bolt (from a S-10)

So wait, you can't tell the difference between the Dana 35 & a 8.8" Ford? :shaking: The diff cover on the 8.8 is more square looking, the Dana 35 the cover is more oval shaped. The axle shaft from a 8.8 will not fit into a Dana 35. If you breaking Dana 35s get a 8.8 axle out of a Explorer ( all Explorers are 31 spline ) , put a locker or posi unit in it, gear it to match your front axle, weld the proper suspension brackets on to bolt it up to your Jeep & wheel with out worrying about breakage.
