: d60 spider gears - sals
uninformed 08-24-2006, 12:30 AM will d60 35spline side/spider gears fit in a sals rear with maxi-drive locker.
the reason i ask is the 101 gears/axles will fit in and these are about 38mm dia, so if i'm going to get a set made it might be better for the manufacture to make up 35spline axles as there probably isn't a great supply of 101 side gears and 35 spline may be more marketable.
cheers, serg

I have used d60 30 spline side gears in a Salisbury 4 pinion carrier. Most D60's are 2 pinion with a smaller 7/8'' I think shaft compared to Sals 1'' cross shaft so the spider gears won't fit. Some Duall wheel Dodge and International Dana 70'' diffs had 4 pinions with 1'' cross and shafts. All those gears will fit inside a Salisbury carrier.
I think Maxi Drives Salisbury diff lock design is only suitable for axles up to 24 spline.Unless Mal has changed the design anything larger would seriously reduce the cross sectional area of the locking dog I feel.

ISUZUROVER 08-24-2006, 03:27 AM Serg, AFAIK they fit as Bill mentioned above. I have 4x30 spline and 4x35 spline side gears, but I haven't fitted them yet. Bill - do you mean that the side gears from D60 2-pin diffs will not fit a 4-pin. Or just the spider gears???
I discussed with Mal the possibility of making a Sals locker in 30 spline or 35 spline. He said that 30 spline would be easy, but 35-spline a lot more work (but not impossible). It would be necessary to use a bearing with a larger ID on one side of the diff (the side with the locking dog).

Ben, yes only the side gears from the 2 pin Dana 60 will fit, but not the spider gears due to the smaller 7/8'' diam hole. All sidegears, the 4 spidergears and the cross from a 4 pin Dana 70 will fit however. A mate that works at McNamara's tell me that there are also 2 pin D70's that are quite different.

That is good news, so all my side gears will fit. Serg - PM me if you want some gears, I can get more. If you are keen maybe we can see if Mal is willing to make a couple of 35-spline lockers!!!
modman 08-24-2006, 08:31 AM you know hardman bros in melbourne make 101 side gears to take arb lockers.
this of any use?

uninformed 08-24-2006, 03:53 PM ok some questions... what is the od of 35spline?
whats the difference between "SIDE" and "SPIDER" gears?
i thought they were the same thing, mabe one refers to the axle end gear, the other inside the diff?
so are the sals, 101sals, d60, d70 gears the same tooth, pitch, od etc, just different spline/pin dia?

Side gears are the ones that are over the halfshafts.
Spider or pinion gears are the ones that connect the side gears to each other and they go round and round with the diff case.... :flipoff2: Some diffs *crappy Rover ones for instance) have two. Some (Salisbury) have 4. 4 is better than 2......
Pretty Pictures here (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential3.htm), the red gears are the pinion/spider gears.
uninformed 08-24-2006, 06:21 PM cheers all,
so do i just need d60 35spline side gears, are the sals pinion gears a match. or do i need 2side and 4 pinion gears
now to get some custom spindels made.... and new bearings....and some nice drive flanges....
cheers, serg
modman 08-25-2006, 12:14 AM you did know jac mac does 35 spline sals conversions?? (county/defender)
you can bore the sals spindles but :shaking:
he does nice spindles and flanges, sam posted pics on outerlimits ages ago.
isuzurover is the archive king, he may be able to track the photos down

Thanks modman - I think...
I think those pics are long since dead. Jacmac does indeed have 35 spline sals kits, but as I recall it works out about $3k for locker, axles and spindles. I like the simplicity of the MD locker, and if Mal can do the same thing for less money then I am sure it will sell well. If not, then I will give my $$$ to Jacmac.

# Currently this VACUUM DIFF LOCK is available for; Toyota LANDCRUISER
# Toyota HILUX (PICKUP in USA)
# RANGE ROVER
# LAND ROVER (both "Rover" & Salisbury)
# LAND ROVER DISCOVERY
# LAND ROVER DEFENDER
# DANA 60 & 70

With this Design there are no encumbrances on Axle Size usage, as our AXLES range in size from 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" in diameter. With our Range Rover Units we can supply either 24, 30 or 31 Splined Axles. Our Land Rover units (both Rover and Salisbury Diffs) can be supplied with 24, 30 & 31. The Salisbury Diff can have up to 35 Splined Axles which are 1 1/2" in Diameter.
Dave_Lucas 08-25-2006, 06:48 AM Is there a reason that you do not want to use a locker that is designed for a Dana 60? They already come in 30, 35 and 40 spline as well as multiple locking styles.

IMO (and many other people's opinion) both the Jacmac and MD lockers are stronger, simpler, and have no o-ring to wear out and leak. But the ARB is still a good locker, and I wouldn't rule out using one.
Dave_Lucas 08-25-2006, 09:07 AM The options are not limited to the ARB as the Dana 60 has to have one of the widest varieties of locker availability out there.
As far as the strength that is kind of moot when talking about a 60 in a rover

Depends on whats under the hood :D
In all seriousness (thats a word right?)
Is a four pin diff stronger? Or do more pins mean smaller pins thus weaker?

The term ''4 pin'' when referring to Sals/D60 describes a 1 piece forged cross shaft with 4 legs on which ride 4 gears (pinions) that mesh with the 2 axle gears(side gears) .Twice as many gears =twice as many teeth in mesh = double the strength of the ''differential''.
Technically the term Differential only applies to the carrier ,side and pinion gears.
