I know it's probably not news to some but it shows some interresting updates and plenty of photos. Looks like the defender is going to keep the solid axles for now

I find it interesting that the new common rail engine that they talk about in the article is supposedly out of a Ford Transit van or some such. Land Rover is no longer making any engines of it's own from what I understand. Kinda sad.

Hmmm a new 2.4L common rail and a 6spd. I wonder if it still has the LT230? Looks really nice otherwise, I like the dash and hood. They are doing a really good job keeping the Defender updated to keep pace with modern times. Evolutionary, not revolutionary.

as an asumption only, high is 1.211 and low is 3.269 so i'm thinking they have kept lt230.

63-1 low 1st is good but 1st high is 23-1, 2nd is 12-1 imo this might be too much between gears for comfortable driving.

You poor buggers won't be getting this engine either.
640Nm from a 3.6L diesel V8.

Too bad everyone will be totally f**ked when Ford dumps the whole LR franchise on the likes of Kia or Hundai...

Are you sure about the airbags? Dash looks like it has space for them...

99% sure.... dash is modded out of disco3

there would need to be a whole new engineered bulkhead and other parts to fit air bags, and LR doesn't see USA as that big of a market to spend the dollars...

so no air bags

cheers, serg

I think, based on the sales success of the D90 when it was sold in the US, an updated model with airbags would go off like free beer, providing they didn't get a bad reputation, as they soon would if they didn't uprate the diffs/axles/cv's etc.

come on bill. you know very well that common sense, practical reliable engineering and leading rather than trying to copy the japs have never been part of the land rover philosophy

Yes Serg I agree, But I was rather hoping that a little of the Ford philosophy may have rubbed off on the engineers, and I do use the term ''engineers'' rather loosely ,I know!

The steering wheel doesn't look like it has an airbag or even room for one. Oh well, maybe some day...

Don't forget that Defenders have been diesel only for quite some time. Other engine options were special order only.

Having to meet US emissions regs (which are biased against diesel) and US crash tests would make for a pretty easy "NO" vote.
