: Alternate Rubicon Uses
randii 08-24-2006, 09:53 PM We did counts last year and found a surprising number of non-4x4 users, hiking ATV-ing, MX-ing, MTB-ing, and more.
A buddy sent me a few links that reminded me of this...

randii 08-24-2006, 09:54 PM Got this link from a mountain bike buddy with FAR more energy than I have:

They road the loop south of Loon to the old haul road to Buck/Rockbound and the brought it back on Rubicon to Loon. I talked to some guys last year during the FOTR trail surveys who did the same -- mad respect to them for the workout!

This should look familiar:

I have hoofed it around Loon before (much more fun to canoe, FWIW), and the view is awesome -- here's a pic from that thread:

numtel 08-24-2006, 10:09 PM I gave a girl a ride across the granite bowl who was up there hiking. She had never been in a 4wd before. If I was going to choose a place to hike, I'm sure that I could find a place that is less dusty.
Rockbound is in desolation wilderness, thought that meant no mechanical means of transportation.

Ha....you're right.
Method of Travel - Travel is restricted to horseback or foot only. All means of mechanical transportation, including bicycles, carts, and snowmobiles, are prohibited in the wilderness. Wheelchairs are allowed. Stay on trails and do not shortcut switchbacks or create parallel ruts by walking alongside the trail.
welndmn 08-25-2006, 10:34 AM Heck, I'd love to find more info on the horse trails.

Cool to see different uses out there co-existing well -- the reality is that we can and do cooperate with other users, and that the few folks that DON'T get along (backcountry skiers, for instance?), are a minority, riasing a ruckus about a handful of issues, and pushing for sweeping changes that will affect the majority.... uh.. Who put that soapbox there? :p

I'll remind Craig about that when I see him next -- I know 'the Loop' that usually gets ridden stays out of Desolation, but I do know that he's camped at Rockbound before. Perhaps he's executing the kind of park-one-place and hike-in ethic that the Forest Service wants us to do at Spider Lake. :p

renolaw 08-25-2006, 03:43 PM as long as the bike is no further than 25' from center of trail, right? LOL!

ibrocun 08-25-2006, 11:27 PM A couple of weeks ago we saw a group running the trail as part of a triathlon.:smokin:
Brandon 08-26-2006, 07:03 AM good post, reminds me of a BRC/Cal 4wheel conversation on one of the talk shows years ago. It was about how the snowmobilers were ripping at the wheelers when they are both basically using the same area. Stupid, both enthusiasts but together ruining it for BOTH.

In 1995 when I was in considerably better shape, I brought my friend from IL to do that trail. Holy crap did the beauty impress me as I had never been anywhere in the Des. Wild. before. Got a little lost finding our way thru Buck Spillway then hopped on what I now know as the Rubicon Trail. This was Labor Day weekend and there was a fair amount of Jeep traffic and they all were very respectful about sharing thetrail with us. We were 6-7 hours into what we thought was a 3 hour ride and were running low on water and some nice jeepers gave us water. We hung out at this area with huge boulders that folks were trying to drive rigs over (Little Sluice) and were amazed. It took me about 3 more years before I got our XJ, but I definately got hooked on the Rubicon when I didn't even know what it was while MTB'ing.
Someday, I want to take my rig and bike up there and have my wife drive the rig and meet her at Buck while re-creating that ride. I just need to come up with a handheld VHF so we can stay in communciation in case something breaks on the rig.

The other option is to have a willing participant join in your party ( me ) :D
just in case of such situations, to lessen the likelyhood of being stuck by your self. I've had numerous friends tell me stories of how fun the trail is by MTB and have always wanted to try it. Have Jeep and access to Fat Tire's and willing to travel :smokin: .

resqme 08-26-2006, 11:40 AM Two summers ago Barb and I rode our horses in on the SMUD trail, up to Rockbound where we ate lunch, rode back and swam at Buck, and rode out that afternoon. We started about 10am and were home by about 7. A nice day's ride :).
If your horses aren't used to those kinds of trails, beware...both of ours ended up with minor cuts and bruises on their feet.
Good fun, though!

Paul, totally down for that. As long as someone else is driving their rig with my wife, I can probably get her comfortable with the idea of having her meet us at Buck whilst we sweat our asses off on the bikes :)

randii 08-28-2006, 09:56 PM This guy is serious about his alternate uses... can you imagine portaging all the way in from Pleasant/Loon?

As someone note above, he better not take those wheels too far from the centerline of the old haul road!
