A friend of mine is trying to sell his Jeep, a 79 CJ-7 with a 304/T18A/Dana 20, to a guy that is wanting to swap the manual T-18A transmission for a TF727 automatic out of an '86 Wagoneer that had a 360 & 229 t/case. Has anyone on the board done this? What are the pitfalls of this swap and what will be required in the way of adapters or other parts?
The two biggest pitfalls I see right off are going to be connecting the transfer case to the tranmission and finding a flex plate. The D20 has a different bolt pattern and a bull gear while the 727 will have a standard 6 bolt pattern on the back.
The 304 never had a 727 behind it in any Jeep application that I know about so there isn't a factory flex plate that will work. AMC might have used the 304/727 combo, so you may need to start scrounging through books to see if there is a flexplate that will fit.
No problem with the flex plate any 304 - TF combo will work. The probem is the transfer case - transmission combo. Either get a jeep TH 400 - dana 20 combo or a 727 - dana 300 combo. The 727/20 combo will have front driveline issues and the TH 400/20 combo will get alittle long. While I'm an auto fan the T18/20 combo is a pretty good set up. I'd put my money in axles frist.:smokin:
