Diesel Smoke 08-25-2006, 09:56 AM We can have a thread of our own!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
New rear springs and traction bar.
Figure out why the front tire is flat? WFT?
And the usual, check all bolts, u-joints, fluid levels and such. Springs should go in this weekend and the traction bar will be done the week before hand. Then it's just load up, haul up and enjoy.....oh and figure out the best way to keep HOS from Spooning with me!!!

Cuz there's no air it it....duh.:flipoff2:
Expect dust and lots of it! Ben, Jay and I were there last weekend and swallowed more than our share of the dust. Now I'm leaving in about a hour for Rimrock to get more of it.:shaking:

Nahhhh....I think the other three just swelled up and made this one "look" flat!! Okay, I need to figure out what let the air out of the front tire and fix it.:flipoff2: Fawker! Have a fun and safe weekend.

x2...dust that is.
I have already warned Rusty about the dust levels. Fire guys up there said that we are at the highest threshold for fire danger in 10 years. Basically that a fire could *start* by breathing too hard...
The trails that I ran weren't toooooo bad. It was mainly RD1708 (Milk Pond Road) that was and is the dusty bitch...
Trails look dry like this::::

Speaking of fire danger, any required equipment needed specifically to be fire safe? I know in Oregon, once the fire danger get high you have to carry a shovel and fire extinguisher/gallon of water. I've got two fire extinguishers, but won't pack a shovel, unless I need it.

Nothing enforced Carl...
Just common sense stuff...
RockScout has a *spark arresting* type of muffler right? You know a flowmaster, turbo muffler, basically a chambered muffler of some type...

In one of the PM's I sent out I said I had a seat. Colin wanted it but couldn't leave Friday morning, so he's out. It's still open. Chris and I are headed out the morning of Friday the 15th, time TBD. So, if you want it it's yours. I could even put you up for Thursday night at the my house, so we could leave from there. Just say the word. I'll also be bringing my tent, the big one, so there space for your bedroll.

Hey Carl, you wheel without a shovel (and in the PNW no less)???
My shovel has saved my butt on a few occaisions when wheeling in muddy areas. A lot of my wheeling has involved only one or rigs (including my own) however, and often without a winch in sight. A come-along takes a long time! Are you gonna take your diesel, or are you taking RockScout?
Thanks Chad... a 'help me break my Rubicon cherry the right way' list would be nice:D Up here we shit in the trail and do smokey burnouts in every open space. Maybe some links to threads in the con forum about the do's and donts, what to bring not to bring.
Dan brings some enlightenment to my question about wheelin' in the PNW without an e-tool... Down here in California we burry our shite (when we're not packing it out). Without a shovel you'd need some strong diggin' hands! Of course the ground's much softer in the rainy PNW... :flipoff2:

Nope, I usually have a shovel in any rig I am wheeling, but with the fire danger in Oregon, you have to have a shovel with a certain length handle. I'll be wheeling Rock Scout, so a shovel may only be needed on bathroom brakes. Between the winch and locked front and rear, the shovel has been relgated to a bath room tool only.

That is why I have it. I aired up Dan (30 psi) last time out so he could make it back to his tow truck. Got mine aired up enough (20 psi) to get home and blew an air line out. Some how my limit seems to be about 8 tires from single digits to about street pressure. Maybe I need a new design

Diesel Smoke 08-29-2006, 10:10 AM New springs and muffler are officially in. Now all we need is to get the traction bar in and I'll be ready to wheel. Dad kept asking me when the trip was last night. He figured they way I was working it was this weekend, really odd to be this far ahead! I also replaced the bolt holding the exhaust pipe to the manifold with fine thread. The course kept coming lose, even with lock washers, hopefully these will hold better.
uglyscout 08-31-2006, 12:59 PM Making progress --- see original list!!!

I'd really like a temp gauge before I drive 200 miles...
And a CB...
But the rest of the stuff is almost done.

Chris is the CB doesn't show up we can use FRS radio's for the drive up. While it will be cumbersome on the trail they would probably work there to. In fact Rock Scout has no CB so I'll probably be bringing a set just in case.

Harvester of Sorrow 09-07-2006, 01:56 PM My list of chores....
1. Test solenoids on winch to see if they are what is wrong. (Pegs out volt meter in the wrong direction and winch works at half speed)
2. Pick up Warn Premium Hubs from parts store. (Ordered today  )
3. Fill up Co2 tank. (Empty)
4. Re-wrap duct tape around rear springs. (Why bother with clamps)
5. Try and finish windshield drop modification. (Pure :grinpimp: factor)
6. Wire new head lights with HALO rings and Hi/Low relays. (Pure :grinpimp: factor)
7. Re-seal rear Dana 60 diff cover and change fluid. (Leaking and I think it is almost dry... )
8. Try not to piss off girl that is going to be going. (this should be the hardest on the list)
Updates as they occur.....:)

My mystery front tire turned out to be some big checks in the side wall, from wheeling somewhere. One them is pretty deep and will leak off. I am going to try and track down a good used 35 to put on there for the trip, if not I'll be wheeling an almost blad AT tire and no spare.

Put an innertube in it. And/or glue the tire to the rim with some good goobers of glue in the chunk/cut.
There have been reports of Gorilla Glue working on side-wall cuts here on the board......
Howlong does it take to go flat??? Does it hold the bead?? If it does, run it, but bring a spare.
The innertube is a sure thing however

I had totally spaced the Gorilla Glue thing!! My plan as of now is to try a Saftey seal plug in the check that is leaking and proabably GG the rest. Worst case senario I bug Chris for a few #'s of air now and then, or run the spare.
Good news is the traction bar is DONE! Took forever, lots of little details to work out, lots of cutting, coping, milling and trimming tube. I or Binderbound will have pictures late this weekend.

I have had great success with Saftey Seal in side walls.... Ran one 700+ miles :D Took it in to Les Schwab and they said --- You didn't drive that here did you

Not really all that much to explain. We used BTF traction bar brackets, 1.25"x0.25" DOM for the bar and plated it with some 1/8" steel. The top end has a 3/4 high misalighnment heim and we used an old shackel from Big Red.
Our biggest problem was clearance, getting it all to fit between the shockmount, shock and muffler. Once we got it all mocked into place it was just a matter of tacking things in, checking final fit and welding it up. I am very excited to wheel it with the bar in. Should be a good weekend.

Ben W 09-14-2006, 11:11 AM Damn!

:D That last one was a slight exageration, that's 5600', so that's what the weather will be like on top of the ridge and at funny/moon. This one is probably more accurate for camp, http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/index.php?wfo=pdt&zone=waz501&fire=waz680&county=wac037&dgtl=1&lat=47.007083333333&lon=-121.08625

Ben W 09-14-2006, 11:20 AM you need either an OHV permit or street license, so yeah you should probably renew your permit

Thanks, I'll do it on my way home.

Technically, yes, you need an ORV tab MINIMUM to be on the TRAILS. For the road, you need to licensed. Ben or Binder could probably tell you the odds of getting pulled over if your ORV tab is expired. If you had time, I would probably try to get a new one.
between you and me (and the entire board that is reading this).... grab a plate off a rig in the yard with good tabs and zip tie it to the cage behind the seats. Then don't drive like and ass and stay off the main road (i.e. hwy410) and stay on the trails and you *should* be good. If we happen to get pulled over, I *doubt* someone would actually run tabs or plate numbers....
but, that would also be illegal and I don't recommend it......................

Could a cop really tell the difference between a 1980 Scout and a Scout 80??:flipoff2:
I am not going to chance it. I'll have my new OHV tag and go from there.

Wow, I wanted cooler weather and maybe a little rain (before we got there) to knock down the dust... but I wasn't asking for that.
Still, if its partly cloudy/sunny, and it rains good today and then the rain stays away durring the weekend all will be good.
Should be a good time either way. Not a big fan of camping in the rain, but the wheeling should be good either way.

My winch isn't done today...:(
I hope the dust is just knocked down and not much more...I don't want to be "that guy"...
Off to go get Co2 filled, get some spare joints (finally), and a long valve core tool...
pppfffttt...who needs lunch anyway...
Ben W 09-14-2006, 11:42 AM I hope its a muddy sloppy slick cold mess. That would be great fun. :jeep:
Mechanos 09-14-2006, 12:50 PM My winch isn't done today...:(
Take it with you.... maybe you can fiddle-fuck around with it and get it operational while you're sitting in camp on Friday waiting for everyone else to show up.

Not much to fiddle fuck with...I tucked that winding back in...glossed it with varnish...and it (the motor) is still buzzing and slow to rotate. That tells me that one of the windings is shorted to the shaft etc...
Right?
Mechanos 09-14-2006, 01:17 PM Ahhh..... I didn't know you had it back together yet.
In that case..... fab up a hand crank. :flipoff2:
RustoleumWhite 09-14-2006, 02:32 PM Didn't someone offer you a new (used) motor??
You could probably get a new one out of WARN pretty quick... heck, either carl or dan lived right down the street from WARN IIRC (might be smok'n crack though).
I have a power-in only motor off an old 8000 (Beleview) that I could probably grab... but won't do much good for you with the 8200 (no free spool for those less eduacted).

The weather is looking beautiful, I'm lovin it.

Yeah WARN is really close, so if you needed a motor picked up it wouldn't be a problem. I'd probably just have my Dad stop by, as he drives by everyday on his way to work. However for this trip I think it's a bit late. Dad's home and I am not going to get out of work in time to run over there. Good idea, just a few days too late.
Ben W 09-14-2006, 03:55 PM He'll be fine. He's not going to need to winch, unless he does something dumb.

I know of one cop that could tell! :flipoff2:
Most wouldn't know a Scout 80/800 from a Scout II. Most don't even know what an International is. "Isn't that some kind of Jeep?"
A high enough percentage would be able to tell that RockScout is not a 1980 that I wouldn't risk it however. If it smells funny they're gonna want to see the VIN plate (which in addition to not matching the VIN for your Diesel's plate wouldn't have been screwed to the firewall on a 1980 vehicle...). You're much better off taking care of the OHV registration.
Muxley 09-14-2006, 07:28 PM Where's the sense of adventure in that? For Disney I didn't have my junk tagged so I strapped the tire over the tailgate so they wouldn't be able to see anything anyway. Turns out the local K9 cop hangs out at the gas station. Parked beside him 2 days in a row. Of course my junk was still stock, so there wasn't much to make them look twice other than that ugly color. :(
Diesel Smoke 09-14-2006, 10:08 PM No worries, I've got a brand new Oregon OHV tag for the truck with me.
Harvester of Sorrow 09-15-2006, 01:46 AM 1:45am...
I am drunk
I am semi packed (food only)
I am so looking forward to whatever the weather might bring this weekend
I am looking forward to this weekend
Everyone please drive safe...The Rubi...The Naches...where ever you might be going.
Harvester of Sorrow 09-15-2006, 10:05 AM Late start....:grinpimp:
See everyone up there....:smokin:
RustoleumWhite 09-15-2006, 11:58 AM I'd say....
I'll be leaving here in a couple hours.... lunch with the Ms., get in truck and leave.
Piece of cake.
I'll have some cold ones ready for when I get up there, all though I suspect HOS will be a couple sheets to the wind already..... :Flipoff2: :flipoff2:
