My daughter's 78 is dieseling pretty bad and I suspect timing is a problem. Does anyone know what the timing on a 78 345 auto should be???

The smog report said it was tested at 7 degrees BTDC.

TIA :)

Whatever makes it run well.

I guess I could just retard the timing until it goes away. Should work :emb:

that can be hard if the dizzy lost a mechanical advance spring or if the vacume advance diaphram got stiff and then got inverted

they both cause lots of unwanted advance

I'd check both if it ran well with the current crank advance setting

What is it currently set at?

What's the idle RPM? Mine will diesel if I forget I have the hand-throttle on to bump up the RPM a bit (I'll run a little higher idle on the trail. Gotta keep the fuel flowing or it percolates)

Factory spec is 0-deg BTDC.

Most of mine are around 12 BTDC, but at 4,000+ feet.

One runs 25+deg static advance. But that one's a 304. :D

Generally.. advance it till it pings, then back off a touch.

I haven't checked it but the smog cert says it was at 7 degrees BTDC.

Man- I need to get a factory manual on this beast.

And a steal at $73. Ever try buying one for a late model car from the dealership?

I don't think the price has gone up much since I bought mine a number of years ago.

I need to get a replacement.. mine's kinda greasy. :D

Invaluable for any pseudo-stock stuff, though.

I also find my Chilton's '71-78 truck book (big thick mother, too) pretty handy for other things.

Sometimes it's just another view of the same thing in the IH manual.. other times it's because the IH manual calls for IH-wrench number ABC123.. and the Chilton says "23-inch pounds" :D

That, and the Chilton's covers the Chevy parts I use.. :)

I've got a similar book, late 60's to mid 70's. Has data for all the t-cases, and trannies, axles etc. Comes in real handy when you start running parts from differant vehicles.

It really is ZERO per IH.. but they run like crap. :D

Most people run somewhere around 10 most of the time.

Timing at zero and we have to fix that, castor at zero and we have to fix that, blah, blah... :rasta:

I think the timing at zero is to satisfy the smog nazis.. and/or for those people that would run their 345s flat-out in 20k GVW vehicles all day long.. on Mexican gas. :D

Supposedly if you have anything but 0-deg caster with manual steering, it's even more of a b*tch to turn than you'd think it would be..

Just got my Travelette aligned and I now have 0-deg on one side, and 9/16 or something on the other.. the most he could get out of the IFS front.

Of course, with a truck that long, who needs caster?

At least it doesn't pull to the side like it was..
