I have a 71 FJ-40 with a 351w and a np435. When it is running it makes the most god auful squealing noise i have ever heard. It will stop at very low RPMs and it also goes avay when the engine is under load (with the throtle open). It isnt the belts slipping because i ran it with out them and it still did it. it isnt the distributor, cap or rotor (new). I am begining to think it is the carb but there arent any uncapped vacume ports that i see. I am running a Q-jet with a manual choke. I am fresh out of ideas so any help would be apreciated.

Thanks
Michael

That's what I was thinkin. OMG:eek: Where's the cat?? :D:D

Seriously though, go get one of them stethscope thingy's like doctors use to listen to your heart. (They make em for mechanics) Sears has a nice one. You will know right away when you place that probe on the right spot. How about your water pump or if you have a serp belt, it might be the tensioner. I've had both scream like a banshee due to worn bearings. I highly doubt it coming from the carb if it's a 'squeal'. You said it makes the noise with the belts off. ALL belts off??? Smog pump?? Hmmm, hard to guess without actually hearing it in person. Go get that thing from Sears. Heck, I think even Pep Boys has one... :D

i dont think it is the throwout bering because it is brand new and it does it wether the clutch is in or not. I am runing V belts so it isnt the tensioner (i dont have one). the only accesory i have is an alternator. no smog pump because i live in Alabama. the thing that gets me is that it goes away when the throtle is opened so i am thinking it is a vacume leak.

Thanks Michael

Was is Charley on this bb that had the new crate motor that did the same thing. I think his problem was a clogged or plugged up vavle cover breather??????? Maybe he will respond.

i figured it out today. the bolts that went from the carb to the adaptor were to long by about 1/16 of an inck so when i tightened them down it pushed the adaptor away from the inake causing a vacume leak. i shortened the bolts and now everything is good to go.

Definitly check the carb gasket or spacer or whatever your running.

Its fixed, but thanks for the idea.

It was definetly the gap between the adaptor and the manifodl.
