: NEW bits on my cruiser :D
Box Rocket 04-25-2002, 03:55 PM Just grabbed the digital camera and headed out to the parking lot to snap a few pictures of some of the new shtuff I just did to my FJ40. That list includes new 5" Alcans, new Nacho RS9000 shocks, Man-a-Fre ubolt flip kits, and a homebrew "powertank".
Thought I'd share the pics with everyone.
There was also some discussion in another thread about mounting the front cage hoop and still having room for your feet. I snapped a shot of my cage just to show my approach on that topic.
Also snapped a shot of my "frankenskidplate":)
Here's the first shot of the airtank. It's just a beverage canister with an adjustable regulator, and I have a 25' hose. Excited about not having to run to the gas station to fill tires, and also about being able to run air tools if necessary.:)

Box Rocket 04-25-2002, 03:56 PM Here' s the second shot of the airtank.
Just so no one asks, the ratchet strap in the first shot is keeping my busted tire carrier from bouncing so much.:)

Box Rocket 04-25-2002, 03:57 PM Here's a side shot of the truck with 5" alcans, 2" overstock shackles and new shocks with my 35" MTRs.

Box Rocket 04-25-2002, 04:05 PM Last one. This is the frankenskidplate. The round bars are SOLID! with some heavy plate welded in for good measure. Yeah, its heavy but it works!

Hope you enjoy those. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.
Can't wait to test this stuff in Moab next week.
Box Rocket 04-25-2002, 04:06 PM Oh, forgot one! Here's how the front of my cage is mounted for those that care.........yeah right.

Big DW 04-25-2002, 05:39 PM are those rancho 9000's or are they really Nacho 9000"s? And if so where did you purchase the Nacho shocks?
Nice rig...like your roll-bar attachment up front...
Sloan 04-25-2002, 06:17 PM Nice...:D How do those 5" Alcans flex?
wngrog 04-25-2002, 06:36 PM I love how you did the Shackle reversal without the :rainbow: towers that most kits have!
How did you correct your caster?
Looks Awesome...Alcan really makes a fabulous spring and it looks like they turned out about right in height.
I am digging that rig!
See you in Moab...
r77toy 04-25-2002, 08:08 PM Adam, have you tested your cage yet? I'm planning something similar, why did you bend the tubes inward at the dash? Does it tie into the firewall or floor behind the dash, or just the dash?
Sloan 04-25-2002, 08:10 PM I have the :rainbow: towers.:emb:
Mr McGee 04-25-2002, 08:15 PM hey where'd ya get the gook toyota logo on your hood?? :D
Advent Horizon 04-25-2002, 09:42 PM Hey, yeah, I want one of those logos, too!:D
Rodeo 04-25-2002, 09:58 PM Very nice looking truck. I'm hoping to eventually get 35" tires on my cruiser. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to do SOA or SUA. How is the on-road ride of the 5" Alcan springs? Thanks...
BJ On Roids 04-25-2002, 10:08 PM GRRRR u-bolt flip kits? ;)
60 series front u-bolts and machine your own plates and spacers!!
LOOKS good though,
curious why no SOA?
shackle reversal is cool and i also wanna know like that other guy, is your rollbar just connected to the dash? or to the firewall?
looks good
i especially love the NACHO 9000s at first, in the description up the top, i thought you made a typo ;)
then i wihs i thought of it and did it to mine :(
ours are a single piece sticker on the ranchos....... :(
edit: good eyes whoever spotted the logo on the hood, DAMN, im straining to see it!!
is it just me or does that say Tart? or something similar, its on my oil filler cap and other parts, as well as toyoDa power steering and one Daihatsu symbol (grinder fixed) its factory on the diesels a daihatsu 'D' cast into the block!
i like the newer symbol, the 3 ovals shaped like a 'T' or the cowboy hat as my brother reckons....
i have it stitched into my bikini top!!
CaverInaCruiser 04-25-2002, 10:35 PM Looks nice Adam. What's with the funky gear shift lever, it looks a little long??? Those 35's look a little small...
Now, lets just get some Tiger Stripes on your dash....
Box Rocket 04-26-2002, 09:48 AM Holy sheeeot! Lot's of questions to answer. Didn't expect this response. Let me answer some of the inquiries.
Big Dave : They are Rancho's, I just "modified" the sticker that goes on them.:)
Sloan : The only testing I've done so far was to throw it on a ramp immediately after I got them on. Honestly it was about as expected. A bit stiff. The fronts actually flexed really well but the rear is pretty stiff. I had some Alcans on my minitruck that were a bit stiff to start but once they broke in, they were SWEET. Nolan can tell you what he thought of his ALcans.
Nolan : When I first did the shackle reversal, I cut off the spring perches and rotated them. The first version of my shackle reversal used the stock fixed hanger at the shackle end with a custom shackle that fit inside the hanger rather than sleeving the top pin through the frame. I ran it that way for about 4 years. I started getting some lateral slop in it and decided to change it and sleeve it through the frame. When I did that, I added 4* shims. The thing trakcs super straight! I'm a wee bit concerned about my u-joint angle at the pinion in the front with the shims. I may end up pulling the shims in the campground at Moab. Don't think it will be necessary to cut and turn the knuckles but it is a possibility.
r77toy : I haven't tested "MY" cage but before I had a local cruiser shop build mine I saw a nearly identical cage do a triple rollover in a cruiser on Potato Salad Hill in Moab. The cage took it like someone just farted on it. The relieved any of my doubts that the dash mount would be strong enough. The only place I can maybe see an issue with strength is maybe a high-speed rollover on the highway. But I've seen several cages with "normal" mounting (some even to the frame) totally crush in high-speed rollovers. Bottom line is I totally feel safe in it with my wife and 2 year old son. My wife's actually driving it today. She's awesome!
Mr McGee : There was someone on the LCML a couple years ago selling stickers with that logo. I just cut the letters out and stuck 'em on the hood.
Rodeo : I think the on-road ride is great for a SUA truck. I've ridden in SOA trucks and you'll get no arguement from me that SOA trucks ride NICE! I am coming from 5 years of daily driving and trail use on a set of OME springs that I thought rode great. The Alcans are ever bit as nice a ride and they aren't even broken in yet.
BJ On Roids : Those flip kits are "bonzer!" Yeah there are cheaper approaches but these are top notch. Heck if the two highest ranking cruisers in ARCA are running 'em, I think they'll hold up to the abuse I put 'em through.
As for not going SOA. This has been a debate in my mind for a long time. Here's the short answer. I've run my truck SUA for years now and I've been very pleased with the performance. There are other guys in our club with SOA trucks that are setup identically to mine with the exception of suspension and they're breaking stuff A LOT more than I am. Honestly, I rarely break stuff. SOme of you will say I'm now wheeling hard enough. I'm definitely not as HARDCORE as Nolan an lots of guys on here but I've run some gnarly 4+ and 5 rated trails and I'm doing all the same obstacles that the SOA guys are breaking on. Now I know a lot of that can be contributed to driving style. Maybe I'm patting myself on the back on that one.
The other end of this issue, is that I seriously considered going SOA but if I did, I was going custom axles, stretching the wheelbase, going hydro-assist steering, basically something like Nolan's truck. So for starters to do the SOA the way I wanted was just too much $$$ right now and I also didn't feel like hacking up the decent body on my truck to do it the way I wanted to. And lastly, the truck's worked so well this far, I figured..." why mess with something that works great as is?"
The rollbar is tied only to the dash. It's actually a very stong point being directly tied to the A pillar that sits sirectly on top of one of the main body mounts. So indirectly it is tied to the frame.
The Nacho shocks came with a single peice sticker. I just got creative with some scissors.
CaverInaCruiser : The shifter is the one that came with the SM420 that I'm using. Yeah it may be a little long but I like it. I've thought about trimming it down some, but I'm in no hurry.
The 35's will do for now. I am seriously thinking about some 37's though. I just want to see how things work in Moab next week before I jump the gun.
Screw the tiger stripes.

You can edit your message so you don't have to post a second one to make corrections... just a friendly FYI... oh yeah...
:flipoff2:
nice cruiser
BJ On Roids 04-26-2002, 03:57 PM your point about the cage being strong, right above the body mounts and above the a-pillar is a good point....i hadnt thought of it like that
here's hoping you never need it
but ill give it 2 things, it looks sweet and keeps the foot wells clear for feet ;)
goldenarrow 04-26-2002, 09:58 PM hey i was wondering how much were those alcans?:jeep3:
Box Rocket 04-29-2002, 09:05 AM The Alcans run $185 per spring for FJ40's.
Very nice rig.
What adapter plate are you running? It looks like it clocked the tcase down a bit.
What front drive shaft are you running? It looks like a long travel. I am just curious how that works with the clearance issues at the tranny.
Thankx
Kman
FIXXXXAH 04-29-2002, 08:27 PM That righ looks SICK. diggin it.
hey, the skid plate just helps keep the center of gravity low, right? ;) :P
Nice Cruiser,
Matt:smokin:
Peabody 04-29-2002, 08:36 PM Nice looking rig. At least the weight of the belly pan is down low and I really like the mounting of your front hoop in your cage. I assume that there's a plate on the back of your dash for it, not just bolts, nuts, and washers.
I wonder if 4WParts carries "Nacho" shocks?
Where in SLC are ya? I worked back at Alta the last winter.
Box Rocket 04-30-2002, 08:04 AM KMAN : Thanks. I'm running the Warden adapter. The front d-shaft is a long travel from Six States. I took a small bit of material off the tranny and built the flange for as much clearance as i could.
Fixxxxer66 : Thanks. Yeah COG that's it.:)
Peabody : Yeah there's plates for the cage WITH some FAT (or PHAT) washers. I'm actually in Syracuse, north of SLC. ALta's the place to ski man.....Sweet mountain!
