: locking new trailer?
offroadr35 04-25-2002, 07:25 PM Hi all. I just this second got back from WY where I picked up my "new-to-me" car trailer. It looks to be very nice and i'm happy with the purchase. Now I need your help:
My ideal situation would be to leave my Bronco on the trailer while i'm not using it. So, what is the best way to secure everything so no one drives away with my trailer and truck. I can handle securing the Bronco, it's the trailer i'm worried about. FYI, it has solid wheels (no spokes) so that limits the wheel locking options, and it has a 2 5/16ths bulldog type coupler. I tried to get a lock for the coupler today but the shop couldn't find any for my specific one. Thanks for your help...i'm new at this trailering thing...

JeepinIan 04-25-2002, 07:35 PM Get a good chain & lock it ot the nearest big tree or well secured pole. Remove a tire & wheel, attach a pi bull, and don't worry. :D
offroadr35 04-25-2002, 07:50 PM can't do any of the above...it's in my school parking lot. I'm sure they're quite pissed at me as is. I'm taking up 6 spaces currently.

KINDA HARD TO PULL A TRAILER WITH ONE WHEEL LOCKED
coyote 04-25-2002, 08:08 PM One trick I use is to visit a local camper or marine store or visit www.westmarine.com and find a coupler lock that is shaped like a clam...won't steal it with that on it.....
TanToy 04-25-2002, 09:23 PM My trailer has a bulldog hitch too heres what I did. Take a piece of pipe about 4" diameter about 8" long weld cap on one end, then on the other end weld a big link of chain and acrost from it a big piece of chain about 20" long. To install, place pipe over coupler and run chain around A frame of trailer and secure with biggest paddlock you can find.

Blazerman1 04-26-2002, 06:26 PM It does not matter what you do, if they want it bad enough they'll still take it.

i realize that but that doesn't mean to just give up and let any ass with a pickup truck drive away with my trailer and my rig. that's a rediculous argument. sure if someone is really good and really wants it they'll take it, but that's not the thieves that normally steal stuff.

Grim Reaper 04-27-2002, 11:35 AM Make the hitch removable and unique. If their is nothing to hook to then it can't be towed off. DON'T use standard 2x2 reciever. Any trailer shop could suply a pintel set up for that. Use something odd like 3x3.
Chain will last about 30 seconds to a blue wrench or a big enough set of cutters. Pad lock out of hardend steal lasts about 35 seconds.
I had a 69 Mach1 stolen while it was on a trailer. The trailer was backed up to a peice of 6 inch diameter pipe set in concrete filled with concrete that it was chained to. It was a construction trailer rated at 5 tons with a pintle hitch. This was in a gravel parking lot. Came to check on the car and trailer and it was gone along with that set in concrete pipe it was chained to. Followed the drag marks from the pipe for about a 1/4 mile before they stopped and threw it up on the back of the trailer and drove off.
