i puchased a 4-Speed tranny (granny) from Parts Mike a while ago, and have been plugging owr ears ever since. It was fitted to a 134 4-Cyl, and a Dana 18 t-case. there has been quite a bit if metal dust on the Drain plug, and a tiny bit in the t-case.

T-case or Tranny? should i gut the tranny and check bearings and so on, or wut?

Should be a T18 or 98. See http://www.jeeptech.com/convtrans/convt18.html
for ID. Try pulling the PTO cover and top cover and examine the synchronizers and bearings. Should be evident if bearing wear is the problem when you rotate the trany slowly with the cover off.
Try in gear 2wd 3rd and 4th, and push it.
Now my question, did you buy this for a 134 from parts Mike, or was this assembly from a 134, and he sold it to you to put in something other than a 134 Jeep? If it was and you have it in something else, where is the bell housing for the 134. to the 4speed, and do you want to sell it? Thanks, Andy

No, the 134 motor is stock, I used the stock Bellhousing and had the Tranny Adapted to mate to the Stock bellhousing. And Yes-it is a T-18, Also...The noise Accours in 1st gear and reverse only, and Heavilly under load.... As for selling it.................I dont know, i have way to much money in the thing to change the guts ( finished the rig a year ago), i think ill wheel it an kick some ass for a while and go from there, thanx for the help, ill dig into it see wut happens

Maybe some gear oil in the tranny will help.:D

I hope you get it figured out, I like the 134 4speed. I want to do a flatty, with a 134 L head, that way is why I asked about the bell housing. I am curious about the stuff used with the machined bell housing, clutch plate, fork, and throw out, just the stock stuff used with the T90? Also do you know which T18 you have, as far a Ford, Jeep, 2wd, 4wd? I am curious because of input shaft length. Good luck, Andy:)

First and Reverse only... I've ridden in several rigs with T18s that did that... not sure why though.

Aren't first and reverse in those straight cut? that would make them noisier.

I thought that those were straight cut and did not have any syncro's for 1st and reverse. Straight cut gears are pretty noisey....

As far as Knowing if it is a Pure T-18.....I dont know, it says Borg Warner ing the side. Also, we did use the sotck T-90 Clutch , the T-18 was 3" longer than the T-90, so we had to Fag up some lincage, mounts and so on. But, In a few years, or, when i find a donor vehicle, i am goin to put a TBI or Vortec 4.3 V6 in. But this time i am i am going to spent ZERO $$$$$ for adapters and crap like that. I'll cut up some 1" plate and make an adapter, weld the 4.3 input shaft to the t-18 gear and shaft, (cut off the 4cyl shaft), and use the 4.3 bell housing. ( the donor vehicle would be a manual)
I am going to the 4.3 simply to be able to take your foot out of it when ever is needed( or wanted), because with the little 4 bangger, you always have to have your foot in it to keep the motro running, the 4cyl is 75hp!, and the V6 is 150+ and i am at 83:1.
If i had it to do over again, i would have just went with the 4.3 right on the get go with a 4spd bolted behind it:usa:

if it is a t18 it will have the #'s 13-10 XXXXXXXX on the pass side of the case. if it isnt there dont rule out looking on the drivers side above the pto cover.

Mine is fairly noisy and It was rebuilt not to log ago with new syncrhos and all.

the first is super noisy and the reverse is the same.

If it is a bother try getting a tube of high pressure lube and heat it up and dump it done the tower. The gets the gears going to thin the lube out.

If it was real noisy before it will sound tons better and it wont break down the 90 weight. It acts as a carrier for the oil and aslo wont plug up the passage ways.

Thats a old tractor trick my pop gave me. Its one of those ones that actually work.

if you wanna go for broke you can try Amsoil synthetic or a equivelent, but be prepared to bend over and grab your ankles.
Its pricey!

I know some of the early nv4500s used dino oil but they where noisy also, then Chrysler changed the specs and made them switch to all synthetic in the trucks. Bushwacker here on POR had to change out to it and it made a differance as far ressonace?
Spelling) is concerend.

let us know what you figure out.

I hope you're kidding about welding to the input or two inputs together. That wouldn't be very smart.

why??, all Parts Mike did was the cut Shaft off the Main Tranny and weld on a 4cyl one. When i first recieved the tranny, i spun the output shaft and the input shaft spun in an oval shape, i had it returned and fix...

No way. PM is a complete whore for AA stuff - try posting on his board sometime. He's got to be using either an AA input shaft, or a compelte set of gears from a T98 - which was avaliable for the L134/F134. My guess is the tranny got damaged in shipment.
