My disk brake swap parts accumulation is almost complete for my '74 cruiser. The '85 axle I got did not come with brake lines. Is there any reason to install the brake backing plate, or should I just leave it off and run flex line to my calipers.? Thanks...

Always run a flex line to your calipers..
Think of it this way, if you break a axle out in the feild or you need to pull the axle in the field do you really want to be bleeding brakes? or would you rather just move the caliper out of the way and pull the axle?
Just leave the backing plates off if your using discs

I think you need the center of the backing plate (where the bolt holes are) for some reason. Was it a sealing issue or bolt length...? Maybe someone can help to clarify this issue, my foggy brain isn't working well this mroning:rasta:

Thanks WP and Tankota. I hadn't really thought that through. That makes sense. Does anyone know a good source for lines, or should I just try NAPA? Does anyone know if there is a sealing issure with leaving off the center of the backing plate?

where the plate goes on the hub, it's pretty thick--which leads me to think that w/o it, your bolts would be too long which could not be good:D
i trimmed it and left on the mount for the soft line...looks good. I would post a pic but...
