: Airing down and blown tires!

In the past several years, I have blown 4 tires. All damage occurred when I was aired down to about 17psi. The sidewall was the area effected. Is it just me or is it a bad idea to air down unless you absolutely have to? By the way, the 4 tires were the Goodyear MTR, BFG AT, and 2 BFG MT. Thank God for the road hazard warranty!

Maybe it's time to go to a TSL?

...or practice better tire placement on obstacles  ;)

Try a different brand tire. Like a swamper they have good side walls. Ive been running those for years and never blown one. I air down to 4psi and have 0 problems.

I always air down and have never kill a tire. 17 psi is not airing down on 35s.... Unless that thing is a tremendous pig, you should be under 10.

Yipper, I agree. The maximum I ever run mine off-road is 12 PSI. Never blown an MT/R, but have a few Swamper Truxus tires.

I've always been skeert to go under 12psi without beadlocks. Normanlly, I run between 12 and 15. At paragon, I sliced the crap out of my tires, but never blew a bead or cut a sidewall. Friends run about 4-6psi in their tire with beadlocks, and don't have problems.

Either way, the swampers are a lot tougher than the tires you mentioned, James. If I were you, out there, I'd grab a set of 36" TSL's bias ply's. If you pop a sidewall, just plug or patch the damn thing....

Strange. I used to run at 9 psi with the Mt/Rs and never popped a bead or blew a tire. Last 2 times out I ran 5 psi on Iroks and still have not lost a bead(no beadlocks).

the 34s just flex too much for me with less than about 15 in many cases, but I stay off the bigger rocks. I ran 20 in the mud last time and they were much better.

I run my MTRs at 8-9psi off road - without beadlocks. Never blown a tyre or popped a bead - and I have driven over some razor sharp rocks at times. Maybe your problem is not airing down enough.

I ran my dwarf Simexs @ 0.9 bar (13 PSI?) and popped a bead first try...duh...

Yes, but unfortunately for you, simex are known for their poor tolerances on tyre beads.

Come over for our last meeting before you go so we can test the new SSRs"!

No one here has addressed how wide your wheel is. What is your wheel width? 17 psi is pretty high for a lot of trails. I run 35" MTR's at 12 psi on 15X8 wheels.

I've ruined a couple of sidewalls on BFG M/T's but have yet to puncture a MTR.

Michele - It take it you got the SSRs in the end then. Nice tyre. I loved my Simex and still think they are the best mud tyre out there but the TSLs are nearly as good in the mud and otherwise better all around in my view.

Back to the topic, as said above 17psi isn't really aired down even on a fat-arsed Disco;) You are more likely to damage a sidewall because you haven't aired down enough than by airing down too much. I never felt great about the sidewalls on the set of BFG AT's that I ran in Dubai, but I understand that they subsequently changed the compound and structure, so they may be fine these days.

Hey Richard,
yup I got the SSR as I needed a set of tyres for general use (keeping little Simexs for worst muddy conditions),the importer never got the LTB in time so I choosed SSRs in 285/75 size (33" more or less).
They flex nicely and seem really multi role tyres.

TSLs,I would have loved to try and upgrade to 35" (Q78?),
but being caged by legal stuff and all the cr@p here :mad3:
I only had 34" 10.50 as max allowed size...
:(

A mate recently bent the steering rod of his 303d D90 running 35" 10.50 ETs with Staun beadlocks.
He aired down to 0.6 bar and the internal beadlocks worked really well in his words, but the strain on the (weak?) rod was too much.
He will forward some pics,I may post here to share.

Have a nice weekend!

I run the 35/12.5/15 on a 15x8. I feel like the sidewall is getting pinched. When I'm out next, I'll air down to 12psi and see what happens.
